I have an Acer Aspire 3500 notebook.I run Windows XP SP2.It starts fine but freezes up at no certain length of time.It doesn't matter if there are any programs or apps running.I hold the power button until all power is cut to the computer.When I restart,it goes through the disk check to check for errors. Then it boots normally,but soon after freezes up again.NOTHING functions when this happens.If I let it set the fan kicks on and off as normal.What could cause my system to run unstable?I have restored to an earlier time.Nothing! Tried removing programs I recently installed and cleaning out my unused files.Still nothing.Please help.I need my pc for business.

disable all power saving and hibernation options
use msconfig.exe from the run box and disable everything in the startup tab
disable all non microsoft services on the services tab
restart and test it out for a while

make sure nothing is blocking the fan vents of the laptop while you're working on it

does it matter if you're on battery or power connected? usually lock ups like this are due to a faulty driver somewhere...

if yes which version of windows was it?
reinstall that version ,i hope its xp version, with or without sp1.
maby this works.

sice you tried allmost everything(for me at least)
mayby then its hardware problem.
maby the cpu gets to hot and does let go to login screen.

Pull out the battery and try running it off the power cord and see if the problem still exists.

If it still exists then consider cooling. If you're in a hot climate or your fans are dirty or not working then your laptop will overheat and crash. When I get a crashy laptop thats overheating I prop it up on bottle caps or use it near the window with cold air coming in.

If you have warranty then I'd just ship it back and hope they return a better model.

If it was my laptop and it kept freezing and I knew it wasn't overheating and I'd reinstalled windows and tried resetting the bios and such, I'd do a last ditch effort and open it up and strip it down to the last screw then rebuild it and hope that reseating and re-plugging in everything would solve the prob because it could be a connection issue inside and the heating up/cooling expanding/contracting is faulting a connector.
