CoolNQuiet?

I am setting up my new system w/ A64 3700 CPU and Asus A8N5X mobo.

I'm trying to figure out if the CoolNQuiet feature is doing anything for me. I installed the driver and utility from the Asus CD, then realized I also had to enable CNQ in the BIOS so did that.

My understanding was that setting the Power Scheme to Minimal Power Mgmt would activate CNQ, but I can't see that anything different is happening. CPU speed remains constant at 2200 and the temp hovers around 28 C - tho I haven't done anything so far to tax the system. I'm not complaining about the temp, but it was about the same before I even enabled CNQ.

Is there something I'm missing?

i have the same problem, well not really problem, but the same thing happens with me... ive set it on/off many times and its never showed a diff... i just leave it on just incase it is working 😛

CNQ only lowers the frequency when the core is idle or not at full use. It does not prevent the processor from reaching 100% load or performance. There is no reason not to have it enabled.

you are trying to run CNQ, CNQ has to be enable in BIOS, and I'm pretty sure the system has to be idle for it to work properly

It was initially disabled in the BIOS but it is on now. I didn't really see any difference in how it behaved, which made me wonder if it's really doing anything.

On my system, CnQ works as follow. I enabled it in BIOS, installed AMD cpu drivers and in power management, set to minimal power ...

What it does in that it lower the multplier and lower the voltage.

My system run at 2.35 GHz (9x265MHz) at normal operation but goes down to 5x265, 1.3 GHz when idling or not working too hard. Voltage is lowered too, at 1.31v.

How you can see if it works. If properly set up, right clicking on the "My computer" icon then properties, in the "general" tab you should see the speed your CPU is running.

I've been checking that on my system - can't see that the speed ever changes from 2.2 Ghz...

OK, I think I've found the problem - I had also installed another utility called AI Booster - evidently it does not play nicely with CNQ (even tho both programs are provided on the Asus setup CD) . Once I removed it, CNQ started behaving as advertised - CPU speed drops below 1 Ghz, but once I put a load on it jumped up to 2.2 Looks like the temp dropped a couple of degrees as well.

AMD also has a utility called Dashboard Demo on their site. it shows realtime cpu temperature, voltage, % usage, fan speeds, and if power saving is on or off

If you wanna overclock your cpu just remember to disable CNQ in the bios first.
