Core i7 980x VS 1333 Memory

hi,

i have kingston 6gb 1066 1.5v T.Channel ddr3 memory on GAX58A-UD7 with 980x, wanna to change my memory to 12GB T.Channel 1333 1.5v, does 980x support 1333 ? is it better than my 6gb 1066 ? i dont want to OC ,

you have the 980X and you're not overclocking it?

Officially the i7s only support 1066MHz RAM, but every single X58 board goes up to 1866 or even 2000MHz. Also, a lot of RAM comes with XMP profiles to do the settings for you (and yes, it's done through overclocking).

As to your RAM being better, that depends on the RAM. What are you doing with the system, why do you want 12GB, etc., etc.

my motherboard is GA X58A-UD7 and can support up to 2000 memory, i do some OC and More play games

but according intel support core i7 980x , it can just support 1066 memory,
then if i use 1333 memory , does this memory type(1333) hurt 980x? i play game about 6 hours in a day.

if i use 1333, i must do something in setup ? or not ?

1333 is just what your ram is capable of, you can run 2000mhz ram on a 1066 limit, it'll just down clock.

However, here the mobo is going to be the limiting factor for the RAM, not the 980.

In other words you can use all the way up to 2000mhz RAM with no issues.

You have a crazy processor and adverage ram...
If I had a 980x, you better bet I'd have 1600-2000mhz ram to go with it,

I'm running 1600mhz on just a 920.

You can get a cheap ram cooler on newegg too if you want.

I use that.. Looks REALLY cool, and there is a difference in the temp, and its nice to know it's there keeping the ram just a little cooler. Ram runs hot anyways, and as long as you have normal cooling in your system then it will be fine. Only reason I got this cooler is having the 6 sticks doesnt leave much air inbetween them.


Edit.. I'm also a gamer. Not only do I leave high end games running 24/7, but I've done 10gb memtest loads for long periods of time making the ram its hottest possible temp. Everything is fine in it.. been going strong for 7-8 months with this build, running intensely.

You'll have no problem running fast RAM, in fact the 980X will thank you for it. In fact Corsair have released 12GB Dominator kits. As you have a Gigabyte board I'd recommend the 1600Mhz kit as it's blue 😛

1.65 tops unless you're an experienced overclocker who knows how all the voltages relate to each other. Besides triple-channel kits only exist for X58 platforms so they'll already be rated for the correct voltage.

I used 1.75v memory on X58A-UD7 , system halted, This MotherBoard ( mine ) just only support 1.5v memory. 🙁

It would've halted either because the BIOS wasn't set to deliver 1.7V so the RAM didn't get enough power to start properly, or it was a safety feature to prevent the memory controller from getting damaged from dealing with too much power.

The Intel spec is a maximum 1.65V and as I said all i7 triple channel kits are made within that spec.

If your board is only supporting 1.5V then you need to change the setting in the BIOS to increase it, or you have a faulty board - the UD7 is a high-end board designed to handle lots of overclocking and a 1.5V limit on RAM will greatly limit the types of RAM you can use (i.e. none of the fast stuff like Dominators).
