CPU Help

This is another .. yes.. another question about getting a CPU..

MY 1800+'s motherboard is just about to bite the dust and I am looking to upgrade...I already know what MB I am gonna get.. and I would like to spend no more than than say 400-500 dollars for the CPU... It is gonna be used 90% for games.. and the rest for email and internet surfing.. I don't plan on overclocking(as I don't know how).

I know there are many many opinions of the subject..

I think the X2 3800 would be the way to go then.

I was looking at the Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego and the 3800+ X2 and noticed that most of the benchmarks are in favor of the 4000+. I am leaning that way.. but dual-core is the future.. what do you think about the Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego?

The latest patches for some games (quake4 example) show an increase of 50% more fps with dual core.
Dual core is getting better for gamers.

I'd look at an Opty 170 or x2/4200, and then start with a single 7900GT.....if 10 months down the road there is a single gaming title that you're left feeling "wanting" on resolution and/or settings (doubtful), you can always add another 7900GT for $250-ish then....

(You can always OC your cpu another 200-300 MHz later if you feel that having what is essentially a pair of 3500+ processors is not sufficient...)
