I just constructed my new build with the Abit F-I90hd and intel e4300 chip. The first time I booted up I did not get this error but I got a checksum error that I ignore, and then proceeded to install windows vista. The computer crashed early on into the install and I get the error message in the titel on the boot up screen, and windows freezes everytime I try to install. Any one know what's up?

Almost sounds to me like that board has a problem with the bios. Check the battery to make sure it's installed correctly and seated good. Also check the jumper on the CMOS reset. If anything else, I would try to reseat the processor as well. Might not be making good contact with one or some of the pins. I would start there anyway. I hope this helps and good luck

Thank you, the original error was "CMOS checksum error" but after restart it changed to the message listed in the title. After resetting the CMOS the "CMOS checksum error" came up again initially and then I started getting the "CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck - CPU SOFT MENU" error again.

I'm trying to install windows under "fail safe settings" in the bios. If this does not work I will reset the CMOS again, and then immediately enter the BIOS and select "optimized" settings.

*EDIT* Windows almost started it's install, but this time I got a bluescreen of death saying "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT"

**** STOP: 0x0000004e (0x00000008D, 0x000001fc71, 0x000400000, 0xc04fe388)

Listen to Luminaris above....

This is not uncommon when you do a fresh build, clearing the CMOS then resetting the BIOS will likely fix this.... you may still get the checksum error, but don't ignore it.... Enter the bios setup routine and set all the BIOS settings to DEFAULTs. There is usually a global option to 'SET TO DEFAULT' somewhere in the menus, after that save the settings. The computer will restart and should work from there.

Ok, I just took the steps you suggested and I still seem to be having problems. "windows is loading files.." comes up but right after loading the microsof logo flashes then the computer crashes , it keeps on cycling through these steps: window is loading, crashes/restarts/ windows is loadding, etc... ) I guess my CPU is no good, I'll return it to Fry's in the morning, thanks anyways.

Well, to be honest, I'm more proned to believe it's a problem with the board itself. Are you using a SATA drive? if so, try using another channel on the board. It could be anything from a bad bios chip to the SATA controller on the board. I've had trouble in the past with Abit boards similar to what your having so it wouldn't surprise me. If anything, if you have to, return everything and get replacements.

Yes, I'm using an SATA DVDR drive and SATA RAPTOR HD. I can't even get to the point of partitioning. It says windows is loading while reading the VIsta dvd, then when that completes it reboots. I just reseated the cpu btw (got heatsink goop everywhere too 🙁 will that screw things up???) Still getting the same problem. This is my third build, but the last two have been trouble free.

Verndewd is right, try installing from an IDE drive. If you are only using one SATA HD make sure there are no raid functions selected in the bios.
Make sure your SATA HD is if the first sata slot on the board and boot Windows from an IDE cd/dvd drive.

Please try a quick check in Bios. Make sure you have not set the Drive interface to AHCI or RAID. Install the OS with the drive option set to IDE.

If that does not work reflash the Bios and make sure after you do that you go back into bios and select Bios defaults.

I don't think it is the Processor. I would lean more to the motherboard. More things to go wrong there.

As for too much thermal paste. That should come off using isopropyl alcohol. If you got the past down in the LGA 775 pins the best method is to get a can of flux off and use that to dissolve away the paste. DO NOT TRY TO CLEAN THE PINS WITH A RAG!

sigh, i went and got a new motherboard and cpu, and I'm still getting the exact same error that I listed in the title of this thread. Maybe I'm mounting my NT06 heat sink wrong....

OMG your kidding?? Wow man, sorry to hear that. If your getting the exact same error, I'm wondering if the CD or the drive has a problem. That would be my next thing to check. It's a long shot but I think it could also be a hard drive problem as well. The only way to find out is start swapping parts if you have em.
