i’m looking to upgrade my pc specifically the cpu. i’ve been in doubt for months on what to purchase to upgrade my i3, i would like to keep mobo if even practical, any suggestions or pairs for my setup would be appreciated. looking for better overall performance with multiple tasks which I think can be solved with a cpu and ram upgrade.

Well your mobo supports i7 7700k max i recommend upgrading to Ryzen platform,Depends on your budget but i recommend a b550 or even b450 and ryzen 3600 (good for multi tasking and gaming) or i5 10400f (good for gaming) and b460 mobo.

Your i3-6100 has 4 threads and a passmark rating of 4164. That is when all 4 threads are 100% utilized.
The single thread rating is 2235. Single thread performance is arguably the more important metric for games.

What is your budget?
The best processor your motherboard can run is a i7-7700K which sells for perhaps $250 used on ebay.
8 threads and a rating of 8624/2764

For that, you can buy a 8 thread i3-10100 processor, passmark 8949/2648
along with a lga1200 motherboard and 16gb of ddr4 ram.
