Hi everyone,

I have an i7 920 C0 Stepping and I have currently overclocked that to 3.3ghz and with turbo it goes to 3.4 Ghz.

My idle temps are 38c and my Use Temps are 42c to 45c

While gaming I've seen it hitting 58c.

With Prime test at 100% I've seen it hitting around 88c.

Now my question is, is it worth getting the 930 edition? I want to overclock to 4 Ghz + on Air with good temps.

Thanks to whomever helps me out.

to be entirely honest clock the C0 as high as you can and be done with it - you're not gonna notice 200MHz in real-world usage, so 4GHz is just e-peen.

If though you have trouble getting past 3.4 ish with your C0 then maybe look at upgrading, but there's no guarantee a 930 will get to 4GHz anyway.

Plus I doubt you'd get very much for a C0 920 anyway.

No, it isn't worth upgrading to the i7 930 when you already have the i7 920 CO or DO. I would recommend upgrading your cooler or revisit your HSF application to improve the cooling to improve upon your cooling. Either version of the i7 920 can hit 4 Ghz on air with the proper cooling, which is much cheaper than a new CPU. :)

The c0 can hit 3.8 on air. I have the Noctua SE 1366 cooler so my cooler is fine. It's just that I'm thinking of upgrading it now while there is still some value on the 920 for me to sell on ebay.

If I had the D0 I wouldn't be thinking of upgrading. In Canada the 930 is cheaper then the 920 D0.

So I went with your advice and canceled my order on the 930. I overclocked the 920 C0 to 4.09 Ghz.

Did some prime testing

46 In use temps

89 Was my 100% Temp

Core Voltage is at 1.4

I had it at 1.2 with 3.4 Ghz so I guess .2 extra giving me 4ghz is nice. Seems stable.

I will get another CPU when it's necessary then. Thanks again.

update: For those who care.

89C on the cores...
So that's like 85C "CPU Temp" (Tcase), which is a tad over Intel's spec of 67.5!
I know most of the time you wouldn't be loaded like it does in prime95, but I'd be wanting better cooling than that.
