Crytek to PC Gamers: Don't Fear Next-Gen Consoles

"Sure, developers prefer the console sector because of piracy" I am getting sick and tired of hearing this tired ass excuse. Piracy is EVERYWHERE its not exclusive to PC FFS. People make fake copies of real physical items and these dumb devs and publishers act like piracy is only rampant in PC world when its just the same for consoles and real life items. STUPID ASS PEOPLE.
 
I don't fear consoles near so much as a feel crappy FTP games where you are extremely underpowered unless you pay $100+, if a company spends 10-30 million you are not going to get anywhere in the game for free.

So... do you have any statistical data to back that up?
 
Just as free-to-play games are not all destined to be crappy, not all pay-to-play (subscription or one time cost) games are destined to be great. Personally, I'd like to see Crytek to raise the bar for free to play games and hope they can avoid a pay-to-win type service.

People are pirating free games now? No wonder all my facebook friends aren't responding to my farmville requests, they've pirated it and are playing offline!

LOL i don't fear consoles. I fear the new direction games are being made for the casual. i get it, everyone wants MORE MONEY! I play whatever I like. convince me and you have my money. if not i'll just pocket my money and whistle by it.
 
I'm still amazed why Crytek (particularly Cevat Yerli) think they have a say in these matters. Their game engine is not licensed by many developers despite how good it looks. Those that have licensed it have not made an impression in the game industry (what does that say?) The Unreal Engine 4 now looks like it can deliver the same graphics as CryEngine, and deliver it to a hundred times more licensees on more platforms. Crytek and Cevat Yerli are irrelevent with their opinions.

What stability issues? Make a good, SOLID game and it will work even on Windows 8. For example, Dune 2000 works (in Win98/ME compatibility mode), and also: Serious Sam, Diablo II, Unreal Tournament, Counter-Strike 1.6. These were all great games in their time.

The point is that they were coded (more or less) correctly, not like the unoptimized crap they pull these days - which they get away with too, because of increasing hardware potency.
 
People can play console game on there computer WHICH they were originally created on, so since they were created on PCS... the PC Gaming market will always stand alone okay because EVERY GAME IS CREATED ON A PC.

What do you know about game development? Any actual experience?

Go to any torrent site then swing by any cities street. You'll see.
 
by the time next gen consoles are going to turn up, gtx 790 will eat them for breakfast, and in the next 3-4 years when they will peak, we`ll have graphics cards that will be capable of real time rendering.

That's not statistics. You have to compare actual piracy figures across different consoles.

I see TH posters prefer rant posts that make unsubstantiated assumptions about game development and sales without any real experience/inside knowledge to back them up.

Funny you should mention torrent sites. Crysis 2 was 2011's most pirated PC game. It totalled over 3.5 million copies download. MW3 was right behind it at roughly the same number.

Consoles? Most pirated console game was Super Mario Galaxy 2 with 1.8 million downloaded. Next in line had only 889,000 downloads.

Don't even try and lie and say they're comparable.
 
Cevat is beginning to sound like a D Bag. When was the last time you played a campaign F2P??? Almost all of the current F2P model is for online and requiring you to pay for stuff to play online. If there is no profit for campaign, what will motivate the game devs to develop quality campaign????

The only thing is that I don't know anyone who primarily plays console games that knows it's possible to pirate. Now this may be the case for a lot of people (lack of knowledge about it for whatever reason, I'm pretty sure you've seen people who uses piracy in PC as an argument without acknowledging piracy on consoles), so for it to be roughly half for a single game is quite astonishing.

Perhaps if you go from the angle - knowledge of how to do piracy on consoles compared to actual figures?
 
PC gaming is taking a direction alright. Forget beefy hardware, GPU virtualization is the future. Nvidia is already on that. Best model ever, you just need to pay for games, not investing tons of money into hardware which will be obsolete and worth peanuts in 6 months.

As for consoles, it'll be here to stay for awhile...it still offers unique gaming experience no PC can replace no matter how powerful the hardware...so many PC gamers still don't get it...it's not about hardware...look at iPhone games....it's all about appeal and the unique experience which consoles can provide (provided they don't just beef up the hardware with no innovations).

As for Crytek, not really interested in what they're doing. Zzzz....
 
I don't fear the consoles, I fear the developers that will hold back the PC game development for an another decade because they have to develop them for the slowest system, which always will be the resource limited consoles. Which means yesterdays tech and bad console ports to satisfy the ever growing group of casual gamers that are too dumb and lazy to engage in anything that gives them a challenge. Jump in, play, jump out. Leave the brain at the door.

It's not a knowledge thing if I understand it correctly. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have built hardware checks into their systems to prevent piracy. In order to pirate on consoles, you need to modify either the hardware or the software of the console itself. For instance, you can't just burn a game onto a disc and expect it to play because the Xbox (speaking from experience) physically checks a holographic ring on the inside of the disc (that plastic, unused space on a DVD) to determine if it's genuine.

Sure it's entirely possible to modify the console so that it doesn't need to check that ring and sure it's entirely possible to simply install your own OS on the console but it's significantly harder than simply downloading a torrent and using an emulator. It also may or may not cost actual money to do (I haven't done too much investigating into current gen modding, just the last gen Xbox) so it's already got more barriers to entry than PC.

When developers say that consoles have lower piracy rates, that's why. You may have to buy a $30 mod chip and learn how to solder, you may need to use a loophole in code to install your OS, you may need to crack open the Xbox or PS3.

And if you do modify your Xbox 360, you run the very real risk of getting your account banned because Microsoft is so adept at detecting modification that it knows how fast your hard drive is spinning. And, unlike on PC, if your account gets banned you can't play online at all with that Xbox which means you have to buy a whole new one.
 
Free to play does work, but not nessecarily to the degree of other titles. It does solve the piracy issue though.
Anyway, I've spent money on gunbound, leage of legends and need for speed world - all are free to play and all are making money by letting me play. I wouldn't have invested in either of these games if they'd sported the $60 price tag of diablo and modern warfare
