I find that the Customize Tab doesn't appear when I right click a folder and
click on Properties. As a result, I can't change the icon or thumbnail
picture. It did work once but now doesn't, so I assume I have inadvertantly
amended a registry entry somewhere.

Does anyone know where to change the registry to make this work again ? --

Trevor,

Customize tab is unavailable for system folders. To remove the existing thumbnail for a system folder, try this:

Reset all the folder view settings / preferences

Open My Computer, select Folder Options in the Tools menu
In the View tab, click Reset all Folders
Click OK and close the dialog
Now the Thumbnail reference for the system folder is removed from the registry. The above steps, of course, resets all of the folder view settings.

Delete the Thumbs.db - Thumbnail database:

With this done, Windows XP still maintains the thumbnail cache of the folder picture. You will need to enable Windows Explorer to Show all files and then delete the file thumbs.db inside the particular folder.

Ramesh,

Thank you.

I am trying to restore the ability to change/add icons or pictures on
folders, not to remove the ability to do so or to remove the icon/picture.

I have a non-system folder "Trevor's Documents" with an icon on it, which I
managed to put it a while ago. Now, when I click that folder I cannot see the
Customize tab. Similarly if I create a new folder, the Customize Tab is not
present.

My query is how to put the Customize tab back on the Properties screen.

Trevor,

Note: The Customize tab is not available for special folders where Windows has already set their default appearances. But, you may be able to customize the folder picture for the Thumbnails view of some special folders by using the steps in the Manually create a folder picture section of this article.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812003

OTOH, if the Customize Tab is missing for EVERY folder in the system, try this:

Login as Administrator (or equivalent) and click Start, Run and type REGSVR32 /i SHELL32

Ramesh,
Thank you for continuing with this discussion.

It is often intruiging how solutions that work for one don't work for another.

I had a look at KB812003. It makes reference to using the Customize tab
which is my main problem - it is not present for me.

I am not trying to amend the icons or pictures for system folders, but if I
do decide to, I will look further at this KB article.

Since the Customize tab is missing for every folder, I tried the command you
suggested while logged as myself, who is the only user and an administrator.

The command returned the info box
DllRegister Server and DllInstall in SHELL32 succeeded.

However, the Customize Tab did not appear on the Properties screen for a
non-system folder, even after restarting.

Many thanks for your time

Trevor,

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
-and-
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Export the contents here. Or, set NoCustomizeThisFolder value to 0 (if exists).

Next, export this key and post here:
HKCR\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers

Thanks Ramesh,

What I did was the following
At
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer, I entered a new key with name NoCustomizeThisFolder, type REG_DWORD, value 0

I could not find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

I did find
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
AND
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
AND
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
AND
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

All of these only had the key NoDriveTypeAddress, so I did nothing

However, the key
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
already had the key with name NoCustomizeThisFolder, type REG_DWORD, value 0

At HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers I added the key
with name NoCustomizeThisFolder, type REG_DWORD, value 0

After closing Registry Editor and reopening Windows EXplorer, no difference
occurred.

It certainly looks as if your suggestions are on the right track. For
example the name you quoted seems very apposite to the problem, so there must
be just some small thing I have missed

Many thanks

Sorry Ramesh,
I misunderstood.

Here is the contents of the key:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\Sharing]
@="{f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{1F2E5C40-9550-11CE-99D2-00AA006E086C}]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{596AB062-B4D2-4215-9F74-E9109B0A8153}]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{ECCDF543-45CC-11CE-B9BF-0080C87CDBA6}]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{ef43ecfe-2ab9-4632-bf21-58909dd177f0}]
@=""

BTW, I made a mistake when I gave you the key which had
NoCustomizeThisFolder set to zero. It is
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-746137067-789336058-1957994488-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Trevor,

The REG import looks OK. Here is another value to modify:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane, delete "NoCustomizeWebView" and restart windows.

Sorry Ramesh,
I misunderstood.

Here is the contents of the key:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\Sharing]
@="{f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{1F2E5C40-9550-11CE-99D2-00AA006E086C}]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{596AB062-B4D2-4215-9F74-E9109B0A8153}]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{ECCDF543-45CC-11CE-B9BF-0080C87CDBA6}]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{ef43ecfe-2ab9-4632-bf21-58909dd177f0}]
@=""

BTW, I made a mistake when I gave you the key which had
NoCustomizeThisFolder set to zero. It is
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-746137067-789336058-1957994488-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Thanks

Interesting! I noticed that the Customize tab is missing if the ClassicShell policy is enforced. Disable ClassicShell:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555140. Other than this, no clue left as of now. But will look into this.

Ramesh,
You are a genius.

I changed the value of ClassicShell to zero, which was a bit tricky because
I hadn't changed a binary key before.

Lo and behold, the Customize Tab came back. I have yet to try to use it
again, but that is another story which I will handle myself.

Interestingly, I was not using the Classic Shell. (At least I don't think so
- everything looks like XP to me!)

I have found this forum really good - you have stuck with me and come up
with an answer. More power to you!

Interestingly, I was not using the Classic Shell. (At least I don't think so
- everything looks like XP to me!)

I have found this forum really good - you have stuck with me and come up
with an answer. More power to you!
