Ddr3 in ddr2 slot

is it possible to place a DDR3 RAM chip in a DDR 2 Slot?
i really hope so, because i can only mount 4gbs of ram now, and thats not enough for me 😀

The two types are physically not compatible, and will not fit into slots made for the other. Though if you insist... I suppose that with a big enough hammer, a lot of very fine copper wire, some epoxy, and a little determination it's possible to completely destroy your computer...

DDR2 is for a DDR2 slot and DDR3 is for a DDR3 slot. Is it that you only have two DDR2 slots or something? They do sell 4GB sticks of DDR2 (so two of them would give you 8GB) but they are seriously expensive.

Memory controller can't use DDR3, anyway, unless you're running an AM3 Phenom II.

Why are you such a wise ass when asked this question? It's a question and that's all it is...a simple question. Any Jackass will notice if it is not physically compatible if tried. He was simply wondering if it would work before actually finding out for himself........just saves a little time and effort that way.

hey, i didn't know if they were compatible or not either, Ive learned something valuable about ram today, and i hand it to the guy who had started the smart question....that guy is right, im not a alpha omega of pc's either, that's why i surf these sites, i learn a lot from people who don't mind giving a straight answer about a simple question from another who may know, but there is people like this DB who would rather waste their typing skills on wise ass responses,............i can tell this person may have knowledge on pc's but has the maturity level of a adolescent, that's definitely no way to earn any kind of respect from someone you are handing over some knowledge to.......

This is what they use to avoid such type of confusion if A type of hardware is compatible with type B hardware.

Am3 cpu have both ddr2 and ddr3 controllers and maybe some intel cpu too.
You can read the cuircitary of some board which have both ddr2 and ddr3 slots (like asrock n68c s ucc www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=N68C-S%20UCC ), and then can try to do soldring.

hey all. I actually got a ddr2 stick of ram to fit in a ddr3 slot. The ears clicked in place and everything but when pushing the power button I got no screen and suddenly smellt the death blow. I jerked the power cord lose but not fast enough. Fried my mother board but that ddr2 is still working in another computer as we speak

Well this thread has saved me a drive to the workshop...10 mile round trip from where I am now..to get a screwdriver to open the back up.

I have a scrap newer machine with 6GB DDR3 RAM - smoked PSU due water damage - and an old MacBook Pro that only takes DDR2..I was wondering if the slot was the same or not...SUSPECTED IT WAS NOT but would have had to open up to find out..but leatherman screwdriver not fine enough 🙁 ...Wonder if Leatherman or gGerber make a 'Technicians' version of their multi tool ?/ google here we come
