It's going to happen. I can see it now. Blizzard releases an offline version of the game in 6 months, and you have to pay again.

You've got to take a second to comprehend this isn't just a single flag in the programming that says "check if online". They designed the entire game around being online. An offline version would make it a different game than they envisioned.

And really, what kind of threat power do you have? Most of the people signing the petition already probably bought it. They already have your money. They will still have your money. What sales they lost from bad press will be made up with their virtual store. Are you not going to play the next Diablo in 12 years if they don't give you your way?

You wouldn't even have a legal course to sue. I can guarantee without even looking at their ToS that you agreed to by playing waives any liability they have to keep the servers up.

You don't like to get shafted by game publishers and their goofy DRM schemes? STOP BUYING THE GAMES AND TELL THEM YOU AREN'T BUYING IT BECAUSE OF DRM. The moment you hand them your money they're done with you. They got what they needed. Gamers have a bad tendency to continue buying into series despite bad press and poor past releases. Prime example, mention Final Fantasy. The past several entries have been regarded as not that great, but mention a new one and gamers start cheering in anticipation. They will rush out, buy it by the millions, complain about how bad it is, then jump for joy at the next one. If you don't insist on quality products, you won't receive quality products.

[citation][nom]pomop[/nom]People talking about the RMAH.. stop it. Jesus christ, you guys are acting like kids about it. Honestly think about the real money auction house. There are millions of players all finding the same or relatively same powerful gear. At most, a perfect item is going to fetch a few dollars. It's not going to be some insane multi million dollar get rich quick scheme. They're better off just using the gold auction house. I know many players like myself that will not use the RMAH, regardless of how cheap an item is. Few things that have been said - SC2 was offline. You were perfectly capable of logging in the game with no internet connection and playing the campaign. - The servers now are stable. There are some issues of rubber banding that get annoying, but usually occur far from eachother to be noticeable. The beta was also not nearly a good way to showcase the game. Blizzard did it perfectly in my opinion. They had the beta as a beta. It was not a selling point to get people interested, it was a beta. I'd say getting to the skeleton king is the second most boring part of D3, that combined with having few skills made the beta not a great selling point. The game itself is amazing; if you're not playing it because of some strange reason, you're missing out. Point of the second half - Always remember that a beta means nothing more than a beta. It's not some sneak peak into what they game is going to be like. Also the error 37 during the first two days was blizzards way of dealing with the billions (figuratively) of people logging in at once. Instead of having the server authenticating each and every person, it only did it for X amount of people, and those with 37 just relog. Quick and easy. Less than a minute spamming log in and you were in.[/citation]
And all the people being hacked? Even people with authenticators?

Let's face it, Blizzard made a HUGE mistake by crippling the authentication system by not having it ask every time for the authenticator when it believes your account is being logged into from the usual location. Now, instead of man in the middle attacks, gold sellers and hackers now just have to set up proxy based attacks fooling Blizzard's log in system to think your account is being logged in from the same IP address. NO one asked for this "feature". People who bought the keychain authenticator or downloaded the app did so because we wanted additional security. Not a single person ever asked that the security be crippled in the way Blizzard did it.

And the RMAH does not deter gold sellers, it in fact encourages them. I will guarantee you if there were prisoners playing WoW for gold to sell there are just as many if not more playing for items in D3 to put on the RMAH to sell. So instead of server time and bandwidth being taken by people who wish to play the game for fun, now have to compete with those just out to make a dollar, and they have to compete with these people for server controlled drop rates.

And Activision Blizzard has no incentive to stop it. They get a cut of the sale which is really the ultimate goal, not to provide a complete, satisfying gaming experience.

Why not? lol I mean the game is clearly still in development. I've played this 'beta' through once only and when I wanted to sit down for a good sitting on nightmare I could not log in due to maintenance on the auction house. A day or so later logged in successfully and teamed up with a friend. Felt my dmg is not up to par. Then went on the gold auction house and bought two fist weapons for my monk that tripled my dmg for 4k gold. Less than a third of the cost of upgrading my blacksmith currently. I really don't know why they added the crafting feature. I loot 4k in about 10 minutes. So all in all it feels a bit easy for me as a whole. Not a serious RPG...

[citation][nom]husker[/nom]Everyone who bought the game and wants to play offline is part of the problem because they already voted with their wallets, which is probably the only kind of vote that Blizzard is paying attention to. Signing a petition after you already voted with you money is pointless.[/citation]

+100,000,000

Don't vote. simple. that hurts politicians/blizzard more

How did they cripple it? You do know its OPTIONAL if you want a lazy persons single weekly authenticator check or every single time you log into either of their games/website? If you can't do proper research and gather FACTS (not some cry baby's who borrowed their account to a friend and then got "hacked"). That they have failed with the D3 server uptime is a complete other matter and that is inexcusable especially when enforcing even single players to be on-line all the time.

Simply put - Don't claim its flawed when its optional, its like crying to the car manufacturer's that a person got hurt while not having the seatbelt on. That would be telling, just like the above! And while at it, the reason it is optional is because people asked for it and Blizzard choose to listen to the customers unlike many other companies.

Anytime I see something about d3 and then I scroll to the comments its always about the pirates qqing about offline mode so they can get the game for free. I used to be that way, trying to find anyway possible to get things for free when I was a child or lazy and did not want to work. STOP BEING CHEAP LITTLE CRY BABY'S . /rant off, going to go log in on my wizard and have fun =).

This is just dumb. Everyone needs to stop crying like a bunch of retards. This requirement was laid down 4 years ago. You are a consumer and you make your own decisions when it comes to what you want to purchase. It really is simple, if you don't like it don't buy it. I hope Blizz doesn't cave in to these snibling cry babies. I got the game 2 days after release and I've only not been able to log in once, and that was on the latest patch which was announced. Where does all this entitlement come from now days? Geezus people. And not to be pedantic, but this game doesn't have a single player. It has a solo option in an online game. The game world is completely linked. If you roll a certain legendary, that code and that information has to be made available to the entire "system" so to speak. The items dropped in game are connected to the status of the AH in order to keep the economy intact.

Diablo 3 is nothing like diablo 2 at all. Its basically wow in a different view. Online play creates a delay in the game for me in Australia (where they didnt insert a server) and makes it terrible to play. Screw you blizzard, you killed the diablo franchises and youre a bunch of money grubbing morons.

Capitalism doesn't work when the populous become too stupid to manage their money with any degree of competency. You don't need video games to live, you don't die without them. If the population is too stupid to stop giving money to companies that continually take advantage of and screw them the companies will continue to do so. This has nothing to do with capitalism and everything to do with smart people taking advantage of dumb people. This happens in every form of economy and government.

If you are sick of them screwing you stop buying things from them, it's that simple. No matter how many "petitions" people sign if their coffers are full their model won't change.

I probably won't buy it. I wasn't that interested to begin with. I've played enough MMO's to know that server down time is a serious issue.

As mentioned by a previous post, the only thing that bothers me is not being able to play the game in the future if they shut the servers down. I'm sure there was probably something in the purchase agreement to protect their butts from being sued in that situation, but that doesn't mean it still doesn't suck.

If it's just server downtime, well I have plenty of other games I can play til the servers are back up. I'm not liking it so much that I can't play something else in the event of the servers being down due to maintenance or whatever.

Games these days are starting to suck more because publishers want control via the internet. I've been gaming since the early 80's so I grew up used to being able to play a game straight from my PC. You had better load times and playing experience. But with how they are pushing it now, I don't even enjoy gaming as much. Starcraft 2 wasn't bad but Battlefield 3 killed it for me with EA's web interface.

So many thoughtless comments that should be responded to....but I'll just say that regarding being able to play the game in the future if they shut the servers down, it is my belief that D3 will have at least as much longevity as D2. And if they do shut down the servers at some point, there wouldn't be much of a reason for them not to allow offline play. It would be work for them, but I believe they would do it.

with the current online DRM, I wonder what will happen to your game if they suddenly decided that it is n longer profitable to keep the servers running ?

you can still play diablo 2 today, will you be able to play diablo 3 12 years from now? will blizzard keep those servers running 12 years + after people have stopped buying the game?

I will never buy a game that requires any online activation. there is no guarantee that I will be able to play the game since the can decide to take the servers down at any time, turning the game into a paperweight.

[citation][nom]samuelspark[/nom]They tried this for Starcraft 2. No way this is gunna work.[/citation]
Umm.... you can play Starcraft 2 offline. Hell you can be playing online and lose your internet connection and all it does is turn off achievements if your playing a comp stomp or the campaign.

I'd rather it stay online mode. With D2 offline mode was just a way for hackers to practice duping/char editing and other things. Millions of people play D3 with online mode only, why cater to the few so people can practice hacks.

A lot of my friends and myself included have held off buying this title because of the online requirements. I've heard employees at the local game store steer people away from the title. Lag in a single player game? That's unacceptable.
