Disabling Messenger Will Protect Computer

F irst it was ``messenger spam,'' now comes another reason to disable Messenger Service in Windows 2000/XP.
The service poses a security threat that could allow an attacker to run malicious code on your computer.

Microsoft classifies the flaw as critical and recommends users disable Messenger Service or install patch KB828035, available at windowsupdate.microsoft.com To disable Messenger Service, open Control Panel, double-click on Administrative Tools, then double-click Services. Double-click Messenger. In the Start-up type list, click Disabled. Click Stop and OK.

Windows Messenger Service, not to be confused with the similarly named Windows Messenger, was designed to allow network administrators to broadcast messages to users.

The above XP tip is a good security move for those of you who don't need messenger (System Administrators)
