Dell announces AMD-based Dimension desktops
http://techreport.com/onearticle.x/10581
Dell is extending its relationship with AMD, first announced last quarter. Dell will launch Dimension desktop computers with AMD processors next month and will introduce a two-socket and multi-processor server using AMD Opteron processors by the end of the year.

UPDATE 2: Dell to ship AMD-based desktop PCs in September

Nahhh.. not a disaster... this is good news :) Well not for Intel... but that's Intel's own fault.

See it's not the fact that Dell is releasing AMD desktops that spells disaster... it's the fact that Intel has dropped the Pentium name. Now THAT was a mistake.

That's what you think man. Dropping Pentium name is a good move, since Pentium IV has created too much bad critique surround its own name. Intel wants consumer to look at them with a fresh new look, not the company who keep squeezing every last Ghz out of the processor, but actually a leading chip designer and manufacturer. And beside, they have a brand new architecture, so cannot keep the name Pentium name anymore.

Also, so what if Dell offer new AMD-based computers? They sell like 40 millions computers last year, 2 millions laptop and desktop together doesnt make a scratch.

Ummm having owned and operated my own computer business let me tell you the Pentium name does not stand ill with consumers. Most consumers (the general population) ask the all too often and important question.. "What Pentium is this?"

It used to be a strong selling point for Intel. People asked for a Pentium they got a Pentium. Now people asking for a Pentium will get to choose from two systems that are not Pentiums.. obviously they'll choose the less expensive model... (AMD Sempron64/Athlon64).

Athlon also is a better brand name then Core. It's more widely known. It's like AMD losing the Radeon/ATi names for there products now that they have bought out ATi. It would have been a foolish move... so AMD opted to keep the ATi and Radeon brand names.

This is a first, but i actually agree with ELmo. 8O

Most normal people still think pentium 4's are real top end crap. My one friend heard about core 2 and really got confused between that and core duo. Now people have no point of reference as in a numbered scale like pentium 1,2,3,4 and the higher ghz = better. AMD is in a good position getting in with dell.

Old news IMO.
Not disaster minor loss in market share maybe.
They're fine conroe success vrs this will just equal things out.
Dell is still primarily Intel.

Core 2 naming convention has hurt Intel a little bit. It wont take long until that name becomes well known. For now though Dell will be fine and Intel has good processor line it will just take time for the public to get to know it.

This of course is very good news for AMD and will likely lead into increased market share.

They asked for a Pentium because they trusted the Intel name and Pentium was associated with Intel. Intel will now advertise the Core 2 brand and that will be associated.

Having sold computers myself, I not once ever had anyone ask for a Pentium by name. They wanted the cheapest thing there was. It could have a potato for a processor and they'd buy it if it was cheap. Most people don't know the difference between a processor and a graphics card. Average people are stupid. Plain and simple.

i agree, most of ym friends are so bad about things like this that i wonder how they use a computer at all (them, let alone my parents!!!!) but basicly nearly everyone i know is still stuck in the ghz of things, for example ooohhh this is a 3.20ghz dual core pent it must be better than an althon running at 2.4ghz. none of them have ever heard about conroe or anything so i don't dare tell them that they just paid 2k for a comp from dell with a very dated processer and that if they would have built it them self or even waited for dell to have a mainstream core 2 that they would have had a much better, cooler processer on their hands and my guess is that they would have paid less once it turns main stream 😛

The problem is it those Dells only turn "main stream" mainly after enough of the idiots have paid of them at those high prices. We need more idiots to pay for the stuff.

I doubt that. Ppl that build their own systems and enthusiast might think that, but the average joe that doesnt even know what a cpu is, still thinks Pentium is the best. he could even think that pentium is all there is.

Or she. (AKA my mom)

Good for amd. Dell is trying to win over amd fans. I might even buy a sempron system if it's around $300. I don't need top of the line systems, and you can't build a system for the price Dell charges.

Heh the funny thing is that dell finally decided to use AMD.
The time at which they decide is when Intel brings a better product to market.
AMD had the better solution for the last year so Dell decided hmm we're losing some people by only having Intel. A lot of the people who before would only buy AMD are now wanting a conroe anyway. While Dell will push out a lot of AMD chips I still find the timing absolutely hilarious/after the fact. Interesting to see which AMD chips/systems they make. I'd imagine the budget line at this point but I don't know. Dell doesn't market well to enthusiasts(model/configwise) that's for sure.

Remember, enthusiasts run the system.

The Pentium name had been tarnished and it was time for something new.

1. I still disagree with the pundits who said that Intel couldn't use "Sextium". 8) I agree that "Core" is not a good name brand. Even "Centrino" is recognizable among my not-so-computer-savvy friends (even if they don't know what the hell it really implies).

2. I still have friends who think that buying AMD runs the risk of incompatibility issues. (Though that makes me wonder if they're using 2400 baud dial-up modems to check their e-mail on Prodigy too.)

3. In the long run, I think the better CPU (in terms of price/performance) will take market share away from the competition regardless of name or brand or what Dell decides to sell.

you know... i never thought about that....with INTEL dropping the pentium name....joe blow will find the ATHLON name more recognizable than CORE DUO

thats a great point

Actually its fantastic news, it further devalues monopoly claims from AMD, and will free up Intel's inventories for more deserving OEM's. Intel is also severely crippling Dell as the exclusive pricing model from Intel is now null and void, but since the P4 part of the contract is still in place Dell has to continue to push P4's out the door while smaller OEM's get the cream of the crop Core 2's.

Frankly Dell's fiscal issues will continue to get worse as Intel furthers itself from the company, but that’s great for AMD, they can go down with the sinking giant.

Dell profits fell 51% think their might be a coincidence?

Thats BS. The present does not change the past. AMD spit blood to get where they are today. Dell will have no problem pushing P4s out. Ppl that buy Dell dont buy performance systems anyway. And large organizations couldnt care less as long as the price is right. BTW AMD is not going anywhere, and thats good for all of us as consumers. In fact they are still gaining marketshare and X2 demand is at an all time high. you think it was coincidence that the deal with Chartered went into effect now...

ps. Why dont you also check how much Intels profits fell the last 2 quarters

You have trouble reading? Dell is a dead in the water, the costs associated with bringing in an additional product line(s) online, and increased pressure from competition is putting Dell in a uncomfortable position.

Yaa for Dell keep pushing P4's out till Intel lets them use a reliable stock of Core 2's when’s that happening, September October last I checked? While other OEM's, and even online vendors are getting more new product from Intel than Dell is. I frankly love it; Intel in effect is making their biggest partner bleed into the red and is forcing them to sell sub par parts, all because Michael Dell was worried that "his" customers weren't satisfied with Intel solutions. I can only imagine what those board meetings are like now.

For the record AMD bled because of idiots like Sanders that set retarded corporate goals and excessive spending.

Don't bring in 3rd party chip suppliers I laugh every time someone brings that up as a good point. AMD needs to rely on others because they bit off more than they can chew sounds to me like bad resource management.

You should change your name to FUD. Your post is a big steaming pile of horse crap.

How so what doesn't register with you, oh ya I get it you think I am being anti AMD. Don't get your panties in a twist, I could care less at this point what AMD does or thinks. I'm relishing in the fact that Dell is floundering, that to me is enjoyable and amusing.

all because of the transition.. but after the effect of the transition, i dont think that intel will continue to have problems about their market shares..
