Question Does a HDMI to VGA adapter limit the native resolution of a monitor?

I have a 1680x1050 VGA monitor however my pc doesn't have any VGA
so i got a HDMI to VGA adapter and plugged it in. Firstly the monitor
wouldn't display in it's native resolution and a "out of range" error
message popped up. Then the monitor changed it's resolution to a smaller
one. What should i do ?

I have Windows 10 with all up to date drivers installed
INFO: i used to own a gpu which had dvi output and with a dvi adapter the monitor was able to display it's native resolution no problem

It depends on the adapter. It may have limited number or resolutions supported.

What exact model gpu? What video outputs does it have?
What exact model monitor? Does it have any other video inputs than vga?

May be it's time for a new monitor? It probably is some 15 years old already.

Gpu is XFX RX570, it has Displayport, DVI-D, HDMI. And the monitor is a generic oem monitor (manufacturer is "Exper")
No it doesn't have any other input besides VGA
for clarification the gpu i mentioned that i used to have was a gt 730 with only dvi input. With a dvi adapter it didn't limit the resolution whatsoever.
