At this point anybody who knows anything already knows that Vista is working very well as it is and that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the basic model - a few tweaks is basically all it needed. A different name and the various alterations will likely be the fig leaf Vista haters need to back off of their foolish hatred.

oh i guess i didnt comment why i was gonna stay...

I cannot completely delete all my saved games. I go through games extremely slow. And im still trying to finish NFSU2 so i can finish NFSMW so i can finish NFSCARBON so i can finish NFS PROSTREET.
lol

Halo 2 works on xp so i will give that one a try once i finish halo 1 on xp.

IF there was an upgrade install where i could keep all my current installed games(50+ Games) and keep all my current installed saved games then i would upgrade. AND if i was told that simcity 4 didnt have any issues in the new operating system... yes i would upgrade.

BUT cant. i have to erase everything. Multi booting is too much work.

I might as well die with xp.

we all have our reasons for staying at xp... some people dont want to upgrade ram... some people dont want to delete thier current programs and all thier saved files........and configurations...

i have a dx 10 vid card and still i dont feel like going to vista or 7. I just cant delete all my stuff....

And multi-booting...im more or less saying im too lazy.
what will i really do with two operating systems anywayz?

lol i just found some people claiming that they can emulate games in dx10 under xp... sparked my interest for a second.

is there any valididy in this...?

I take it you haven't read the rest of this thread, have you? Your question has already been answered a few posts up.

As for upgrading, yes you can purchase an upgrade version of Vista that will keep all of your games and data intact. The only caveat is that you cannot upgrade to Vista x64... you must stick with 32-bit Vista. Of course, I rarely recommend upgrading and always prefer clean installs... but to each his own. One other fact you may have missed is that you can always back up your saved games and restore them after reinstalling the game. You speak of worrying about your games in an upgrade... but what about a hard drive failure? Whether or not you intend to upgrade, you're going to have to learn how to back up all data you want to keep... because inevitably, your computer will experience some sort of failure that will necessitate a complete reload of the OS.

wait a minute. the tech guys i went to in the store said it was impossible to upgrade my xp to vista and keep everything i have installed working...

Maybe they were lazy.

okay i see it makes no sense to have a 32-bit vista.. lol maybe he was talking about the x64-bit version since it makes no sense to go to a 32-bit version of vista.

i could move my saved games over.. but will the saved games work in a 64-bit operating system?

and its way too difficult to move newer saved games around. stupid game profiles. that dont allow other saved games to run with someone elses profile ect... complications... they are annoying.

if it aint broke i aint fixing.. i will be waiting for a hard=drive faliur before windows 7

You can put the save files wherever the game needs them to be... and it doesn't matter about the 64-bit OS, since the game is 32-bit anyway. Vista x64 is fully backwards compatible with 32-bit, x86 software.

I'm waiting for DX10 for windows 98. Windows XP is such a memory hog. All the good games run on windows 98 anyway. I haven't seen anything I like on XP yet. And those Pentium 4's are a joke. My Pentium 3 runs much better, with less heat, too.
Since we're on the topic of stagnating with old operating systems and slow CPU's, does someone have any drivers for windows 3.1 on a 286 with 320x200 graphics? I just can't seem to part with mine, and I want to put in a new 5 1/4 floppy drive.

Windows 3.1 fit on a few floppy disks!

Need I say more?

Might as well die if your HDD does from your point of view.
Most games I believe have a 'save' directory where all your info is. Take the time to neatly create named folders after the game and place the save files of that game into the folder. Once done you'll have a backup in case the worst happens, and you can upgrade your OS/reinstall it if something goes bad.

EDIT, whoops should have read the other replies identical to mine, ahwell.

ROFL I Hope This is Your Attempt at Humor and you're not serious

I hope so too, I think so. Either way, doesn't it remind you of the day when XP first showed up. I like what he did there. :sol:

this thread is for some reason going where all threads about vista go, in the bin as nobody can persuade the other, this will continue for along time.

i personally took a while to install my copy of windows XP from a very stable and reliable windows 2000pro, as we all had the same stories (It uses too much ram and cpu, it also is unstable and not usable),
well here we are today arguing about vista, the only reason that it has lasted so long, is that most people have had enough of Microsoft bullying us about and are making a stand for what they believe is correct,

i personally have used all of the operating systems from 3.1 upto todays Vista, and my personal opinion is, yes it does have flaws, yes it did have a rocky start at the begging with drivers, yes it uses alot more system recourses than the so called trusted XP, but it has one of the best firewalls on the market, if u dissable the UAC then u have a O\S that is just as fun if not moreso than XP, it takes a while to get used to, but again it is the most stable O\S around in the Windows series.

if u dont want to try it then u are missing out, whether it is cus u dont want to be bullied into moving to a new O\S for DX10 or for any other reason, u will be missing out.

I have been using vista x64 now for roughly 1 year now, yes i had a few issues at the beggining (dont we all when trying to modify an O\S when u first get it), but never had issues with drivers at that point, never had any problems running my games (Shanghai total and C&C to Crysis), never had a problem with a virus untill a week ago when i got hit by the Windows Worm, which was easy enough to remove with a system restore (which was the first restore so far).

so the experience differs with everybody, although i got to admit that i have upgraded recently from a Core2 Quad Q6600 go, and 4Gb of DDR2 800 ram, which has made the O\S run alot faster and again more fun.
but it did run fine on an AMD 4200+x2 with 2Gb of DDR400 mem, just goes to show that even the smaller computers can handle this O\S.

Sorry for the ranting but this argument should have been ended along time ago, word of mouth is crap from the 6month point of the release date of an O\S as most probs have been corrected.

also dont forget that this argument happens with every O\S, and will continue for along time with other O\S releases, i just wish people would get theguts to upgrade and try it for them selves.

by the way also i have had no probs importing my save games from XP to Vista, just cut to a different drive and then install game again and paste back into the documents directory where it belongs (easy as ****)

once again sorry for the rant.

At this point I have simply heard from too many experienced computer users of the gamer/enthusiast profile that Vista is running great to doubt it any longer. It almost seems that the only people still complaining are the ones who either never used it or never gave it a chance or else tried it early on a low spec PC are with bad drivers. And of course those out there who deeply hate MS and will continue to pile on Vista no matter what because that aids there agenda.

I have it on three PCs and it runs great on all three.

It boggles my mind that people that have never even installed and used Vista of any flavor, can complain and bitch about something they have no experience with at all.

Run the operating system so you know what the hell you're talking about or STFU!

Sometimes ignorance as they say is bliss, but to comment about something you have no direct knowledge about, is way past ignorance!

You are all quite limited in your debating and reasoning skills, lacking consistensy, and hypocrite about facts that oppose your preconsieved opinion.

Well you have to be like that as being fanboys rules out an objective view, and that goes for any fanboys xp, vista, apple , sony ,linux, or anything that sparks your deepest irrationale primate instincts.

I despise you all for your lack of civilised conversation and would like to thank you all for making me feel better about me, and oxycontin of course ,the killer of pain- its truly amazing.

Kudos to papalarge for actually trying and succeeding in an believable argumentation, i wish i had the energy for that.

Its too easy to feel superior on the interwebs.

Marvelous first post!

You despise us all?

You're really contributing to all the things you whine about!

If Vista is THAT good why file copy is THAT slow on ANY computers. I have to mention that trying to copy large files on USB memory or on network is a pain? And why Vista doesnt support MPEG4 and XP does? And why Vista doesnt support properly Dolby Live over TOSLINK and XP does.....and my list can go on and on and on
Agree with the person who said Vista is ME2. One of the worst OS developed by Microsoft to date. Hopefully Fiji or rather Vienna will be better

That's really strange... I downloaded an MPEG4 file and it played just fine in Quicktime. I don't mind when people have legitimate gripes when something doesn't work, but clearly you either haven't tried or you are missing codecs / drivers.

Guess I might add a little more too this thread. I installed Vista Home Premium on my sisters computer (my old computer I built years ago). AMD +3400, 1.25GB RAM, 40GB HDD, Radeon 9000(I had a 9800 pro in it but sold it and scrapped this one up from a computer collecting dust). Runs smooth, and the amount of problems/complaints have gone down. Network transfers are much faster compared to when XP was on it, (transferred large amounts of music/videos when I backed up the data on my PC). Naturally every now and then I check for spyware/viruses and each time so far it turns up clean as opposed to before(I think UAC may have to do with this). Also, one of best features imo is the stability and speed it comes out of sleep mode. It's literally instant, same goes for my pc as well.

Recently too I had to update this pretty cheap 'picture display ornament' , basically a typical ball ornament with a inch x inch screen. I saw no support for Vista and thought it was over. Funny enough, I plug it in, installs some driver. I install the program needed to update/xfer pictures and try to run it. Fail. So I think for a bit and run the program in XP compatibility mode, and tada works fine. So it's one nice little example that Vista can hold its own to no-name software.

you are the exception bildo.
every pc I've had the misfortune to work on for others that had vista was nightmarish. Software needed to be re-bought, drivers unavailable. os very very slow. Wait, you said vista was fast but methinks you may have upgraded from a pentium pro 133 running xp to one of those drm infected garbage pc's sold at walmart? I'm just guessing. I am willing to bet that my 5 year old pc is far more responsive running xp or linux than your new out of the box pc is at running Microsoft DRMvista.
