Hey, I am overclocking my E8400 to 4.0 GHz at 1.3v and the NV monitor that comes with Nvidia chipset boards says the core temp is at 43c idle, and CoreTemp states 33/33c at idle - is this accurate?

I am running on an Nforce 680i Mobo

Also my pricessor only scored 3800 points on 3dmark06 - is that good? total score was 17475

Nvidia's monitor is not accurate for 45nm processors so pay attention to CoreTemp. I'm suprised you got 4Ghz on a 680i, I've had issues with 4.0 on my XFX 780i....but that's not bad for temps at that clock.

I think my E8400 scored higher at 3.8 but I'm not sure.

both temps could be right. It really depends on the TJ max set by the program. If you read the calibration guide, you can narrow down the temp reading to within 2-3C of actual temp.

what program you use you may never get a accurate idle temp reading from the cores. Many of the wolfdales will only go so low on the cores (mine stop at 37) and wont read any lower no matter how cold they are, its the reason intel says to use the tcase measurement. They do however get much more accurate as you approach your max temp and the throttling and shutdown point (which is the reason they are there).

As far as your 3d06 scores go they look pretty good to me. I get 3888 cpu with my 8400 @ 4.2 and 12700 total with my 3870.

More important tho is what are your load temps like and with what cooling you have. With a TRUE and fairly strong fan I get in the mid 60s @ 4.2 1.37v running linpak or high 50s with prime95 or occt.

Hey, I use CoreTemp to measure Temps. I have a Zalaman Cooling unit for the processor and while running prime 95 and processors running at 100% load - CoreTemp lists a temp of around 55-60c for both cores.

The main reason i hopped on these forums is because i just built a machine for my friend and his processor (e8400) with the same cooling system as mine is running at 21c ...or so it says - so i was wondering if mine..idleing at around 33 (stated by coretemp) is too hot. But everyones answers point to - use tcase measurement or my temps sound perfectly fine.
