I've got this ratonga and I'd like for him to do some tradeskills, but when
I talk to the guy who is supposed to let me get into the crafting zone, he
says "I cannot permit you to join our society." The dark elf guy will let
me join his society, but I'd like to join the one in Temple Street if
possible. Any ideas as to why I cannot join?

There are two reasons that I can think of:

He may be the wrong guy - there are four per zone (I think) and only
one of them will let you in so try all of them that you can find in
the Temple Street. The others in the zone are only available when you
get to 10th level and choose your profession and then only one of the
others will become available.

You may have, inadvertantly, already joined one. It's only a short
conversation and you could have joined thinking that you were starting
a quest. Bring up the societies window - it should be easy to see if
you are a member of one of them. Just select it and leave the society
- there is a button to do that.

You don't meet the joining requirements. You can only join two, one
which anyone can join and another based on your class.

The name gives a hint to what class can join. ie if it mentions
'arcane' its for scholars, 'outfitter' for..er..outfitters and
references to wood and nature for craftsman.

There are 4 crafting areas in each village I think. One that everyone
uses for levels 1 - 10, then 3 others depending on what route you take.
If you are just an artisan, you may just need to try the other crafter
zone doormen until you find the one that will let you in.

Remember the more populated the society, the more people there are to
do crafter quests, so the more supplies and stuff the society has to
sell. On my server I have found that only two or three societies are
used, so joining one of the less crowded ones has the advantage of less
people around each station, but also means you have less materials to
work with.

It might also be worth considering moving any alts you have to the same
society too, that way any quests you do for the society benefit all
your characters.
