Question [ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT] Can’t fix GTA V game crashing ?

So for the past month, ever since I rebuilt/upgraded my rig, I have been stuck and lost trying to solve my games crashing randomly, and specifically getting the (err_gfx_d3d) in Grand Theft Auto V. I have literally tried every single possible solution, from countless Reddit posts, various tech forums, and videos.

I initially thought that these issues had something to do with my 3050, and the Nvidia drivers. But I tried uninstalling my drivers with DDU, and installing the newest drivers from GeForce Experience, and I tried downloading/updating the drivers by installing the driver file from the Nvidia drivers page. I also tried installing older versions of the gpu driver to see if that would worked, but still had no luck. I then tried swapping my RTX 3050 with a basically unused GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition. After removing the old drivers with DDU, and updating/installing the correct updated drivers for the 1080Ti. I installed GTA on a new Samsung 980 SSD, and booted up the game and was able to play the game normally for about 20-30 minutes before the game crashed with the same error message.

At this point I was pretty pissed and felt like the issue wouldn’t get resolved. And the crash message “err_gfx_d3d” has been an issue with GTA for a while.

I did everything I could think off and read. From reinstalling DirectX stuff from the Microsoft page. And reinstalling the vcredist_x64 and x86. But still couldn’t fix the problem. These problems would happen every now and then on my old motherboard, the one I swapped out. Which was an ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II. And my old cpu was a RYZEN 7 5600X. Both the R7 5600X and the ASUS B550-F mobo I had gotten as Christmas presents December of 2022. And had been working fine until my games started to crash way more frequently 1-2 months ago.

Literally 2 weeks ago, I had saved up enough $ to buy a new motherboard and CPU at Best Buy and built my pc again, using the same GPU and PSU (Corsair CV550 W (550watts)). I also used the same ram, but got new drives.

I also have experienced my games on Steam and Epic Games crashing for no reason. (example: Fortnite, Squad, Battle Bit) Roblox has also started to crash; out of nowhere, the Roblox window would freeze and it would say Roblox isn’t responding, after around 30 minutes to an hour of playing. I also have tried using a different monitor and HDMI/dp cable. And I forgot to mention that I have tried reinstalling windows 10 and 11 (fresh installs) multiple times and then after reinstalling the clean installation, re trying all the steps and possible fixes that I mentioned I already tried above.

I hope that one of y’all can help me figure out a solution or at least provide some helpful information.

to have a look what the problem could be:
run userbenchmark.com and post the http link of your result, e.g. https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/28977730

Reset the BIOS by jumper clrCMOS or JBAT or similar (eventually you will have to set the boot priority correctly after that)

check windows integrity
open the command prompt as administrator and type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

clean boot

check the memory by running memtest.org usb autoinstaller (bootable USB flash drive)

run the RAM @2133MHz to check if it happens then too

check the hard drive for errors with its manufacturer´s tool

Not sure about other PC games, but for GTA 5 the err_gfx_d3d_init error is mainly caused due to compatibility issues between the graphics hardware and the supporting DirectX software present on the system.

Most users have been able to overcome this error by switching the in-game DirectX API version to 10 or 10.1. Although GTA was marketed as a DirectX 11 game, it’s also designed to run on older DirectX versions.

No harm in trying. Have you overclocked your GPU or the CPU by any chance ?
