i ditched the idea of fx-60 instead got an opty 175 last nite on newegg b4 they ran out, my question is what is the fastest ram i can use for the asus a8n-vm mobo to attain the highest stable clock-speeds?

i have never oc'd, a friend who builds all my pc's will do it, but i always choose the hdwe he is not a big mod enthusiast he is just very good at building & is college-trained with a master's in comp-sci.

i have no clue but what i have on my wishlist is corsair xms 2x1024 184-pin ddr 400 pc 3200 unbuffered. can the mobo use faster ram (ddr3?) or is asus/amd combo limiting the ram to pc3200 ddr2 only?

if so could someone give me a link to print out the best timings & other tech details i cannot even name here 'cause i'm a dummy inside the box - i am essentially a very well-paid bachelor who likes to game game game when i am not working.

TIA for the assist - my head swims when i see all the numbers & brand-names (OCZ etc.) you guys toss about like confetti :?

For the highest clocks, I like the crucial ballistix however, they're one of the most expensive. The Corsair XMS series would be my second choice definately. Get 2 - 1gig sticks

I'm a Corsair guy, and I've never been failed by them.

The XMS series is good, the XMSPro are extremely nice too, and their heat spreaders are more effcient.

My roomate is an OCZ fan, he has the PC3200 Gold Extreme Voltage series and they run nice as well.

Mushkin/Crucial I have heard are some serious contenders as well, but I have not used either.

Definitely get 2 X 1 GB sticks, and if you are planning on really pushing that opty, I'd go with something faster than PC3200 ram as the clocks you will hit with the FSB are in the realm of 550+ DDR (275+ MHz FSB)

Ok an AMD mobo can take the RAM you mention? I thought pc3200 was the fastest RAM you can use...my opty175 arrived today and I am getting close to buying all the other parts - money is no object and it sounds faster, & if i could go beyond 400mHz to 564 mHz like the OCZ Gold GX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 500 (PC 4000) on o/c that would be great 8O ...

just found out from my builder that the pc4000/DDR500 will work so i am getting the OCZ Platinum Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 500 for the beastie 280USD at newegg not bad i intend to oc to about 564 it has mirrored platinum copper heatspreader look out Oblivion, Gothic III, Quake 4 & Titan Quest
