More like $154 mate.

Maybe I should have mentioned I'm not in the US. Hence VAT messing up the prices.

At least I am on the list!
adding more as I get time..
Free power in my server room- but no cards to put on line..

Hey I'm just standing on the shoulders of others and I'm sure it won't be long before I'm knocked off the top spot.

Be good to have you back up and running, its never nice to be passed by a rodent😀

I kind of understand what this is for -- kind of like SETI where you allow your computer to be used by a third party -- but I'm not getting the emphasis on GPU. I'd like to do this, but I'm not sure if it will become complicated when I get a new GPU. Right now I'm using the R7 card that I bought for my son's machine until I can get my GTX 970. Do those of us without high end rigs need not apply? I leave my computer running 24/7, but am usually only on it a few hours a day during the week, unless I pull a late nighter. Will participating in this interfere with my normal computer activities? Sorry to be such a noob, but I think this is a great idea.

Thanks.

GPUs do a lot more work in a day than CPUs. Thus earn more points and more science done.
We have people with all sorts of hardware running. You can even run it on a smart phone with Android 4.4 or higher.
So no high end hardware is not require, but you get more work and points done with high end hardware.

It is adjustable in the amount of computer resources it uses. And it can be paused for a little bit of gaming and restarted where you paused it.
It can be run as CPU or GPU or CPU and GPU at the same time.
You can set it to use all of your computers resources or lower its priority and you can use your computer for daily tasks and Fold at the same time.
I have my main computer running it a full load and can use it for email, browsing the internet etc without problem.
But watching Youtube or gaming is not possible unless I pause it.

Finally got home and downloaded FAH. 18 mins. left on my first job. This is a very cool thing, and so much more useful than SETI. I might have to put my old P4 machine back into commission for this project. I can't get my wife on board for this, she doesn't quite grasp that it's not "letting other people access my computer." But, when I get my old machine revamped for my son, I'll set that one AND his old computer up. With the P4 that will make four machines running 24/7.

I'm just really excited about this. I have a couple of questions. As I mentioned above, I'll be getting a GTX 970, sometime within the next few months. This will replace the R7 I have right now. Additionally, I have an M-2 SSD on the way onto which I will move my OS only. Are these reconfigurations going affect FAH at all? Will I need to start over? I will not be doing anything to the drive that FAH is on now.

Also, I'm not quite following the Flagging instructions (4.2). I remember seeing something mentioned about bigadv being discontinued. Since that was what was specifically mentioned in the tutorial, I thought it best to leave all of that alone until I could get some more guidance.

I'm proud to be a part of Team 40051, and glad to be able to serve a place that has given me so much.

When you change cards just let the current WU finish, then just swap cards and update drivers and you're good to go. And welcome aboard.

The old P4 machine isn't going to perform nearly as well as your system with the GTX 970. Every bit of work counts, but only if you're okay with not getting much out of the power you're paying for the P4 machine. Newer hardware is much more power-efficient.

The SSD won't matter, Folding@Home doesn't read/write much data anyway. The GTX 970 will be a huge upgrade over the R7 card (no matter which particular R7 card it is). It's really a perfect piece of hardware for folding, it doesn't draw much power and should stay nice and quiet while folding away.

Bigadv was a different type of work they used to offer for people with server-oriented CPUs. It's phased out now, so don't worry about that.

Thanks for the welcome and the replies. I guess I got a little ahead of myself, I may have bandwidth issues. Everything seems to run well enough with just one machine, but my wife and my son were complaining of slow internet speeds last night. We live waaaay out and we a have microwave connection. (Luckily we live on high ground so we have line-of-sight to the tower in town, about 20 miles away.) We used to have satellite but it was slower and they would throttle our speed if we used too much data. Still, I am only getting somewhat less than 3Mbps download and somewhat more than 1.5Mbps upload.

I'll need to figure out some way to set a schedule to allow about three hours on weeknights for other usage. Weekends I'll need to think more about.

I looked in my old logs and most work units were 1.5MB or less with a few in the 6-7MB range.
I have limited internet also, so I had to set bandwidth quotas in my router. My upload is .630mbps ,notice the point before the 6, with 5 clients running, uploads would crash the connection if more than one tried to upload at the same time.

F@H does not need a full time connection. It only uses the Internet when downloading and uploading.

There are options for slow internet connections that you can set , that way you only get small work units.

Post back if you have any more questions or need help setting up small work units only.

My internet always gets slow around 5 pm and gets really slow around 8pm ,so I know how the wife's complaints are when she is trying to watch a Netflix movie and it keeps stuttering.
Hope this answered some of you questions.

I got up this morning and my computer was locked up, couldn't even get to Task manager. So I hit the reset button, got Windows and rebooted. When I try to start my FAH client, it won't connect. (BTW, what is the difference between the FAHContol.exe and the FAHClient.exe?)

Also, when I'm having problems getting FAH to open and I go to task manager, I'll see 100% CPU usage and it's always FAH Client that is using it. Am I opening the wrong applications? When I first downloaded and started FAH it worked just fine. It is only after shutting down and restarting that I began having problems.

Well, I don't know what the deal is, but FAH is using all of my CPU and the only way I can use my computer at all is to shut it completely down. When I looked at the FAH Client this morning, after it wouldn't start, this is what I saw:

I did finally get it restarted, only after opening the FAH web control. But then I noticed that I couldn't load any other web pages. So I looked at my at task manager again:

If I only shut down that one process, it would reappear and go right back up to 90-something percent. Only after shutting down the FAHClient.exe would my computer act normal.

Do does this mean that FAH needs all of my CPU and I can only run it when I'm not on it? And if so, does the work that has been done get lost when FAH is shut down. I am off and on my computer periodically throughout the day when I am at home. So it looks like I may only be able to run FAH when I am work or sleeping.

It's supposed to run at 90-some percent, but give priority to other tasks so you can still use the computer. You should only be experiencing minor slowdowns if anything at all. You can also pause it if necessary.

The error messages obviously show something's going wrong, probably related to the issues you've encountered. I don't really know what the errors mean, you can try asking in the forum at their site.

When you set the client up you need to remove the CPU slot.

Glad you got it sorted out.
Did you get a pass key?
With a pass key after 10 successful work units you start receiving bonus points for work units. I think they call it Quick return bonus.
Can make a big difference in points received per work unit.

Not sure what hardware you are running but you can set a certain core count for CPU work units.
If you are running a quad core you can set it to CPU2, one core will be partially used for the GPU and 1 core will not be used.
This way you can still CPU fold for more point/workunits and still have a responsive computer.
You can also set flash/HTML5 videos to be rendered on the cpu so that they do not stutter when folding on the GPU.
Just a few tips and tricks to make Folding enjoyable and productive while still being able to use the computer for other things as well.

I have 6 cores. I did get a passkey. I guess I should post my computer specs somewhere in my signature. Have to get ready for work now though!

He has a 5820k so he could easily fold on four cores for around 10-12,000 PPD and still have a responsive computer.

Definitely agree on forgetting the P4 system unless electricity is free.
