Question Fortnite 240fps GPU Needed

I currently have a i5 6500, GA-H110N, 16gb of 2400 ram, and no GPU. I'm looking to play Fortnite on low settings with 240fps consistently. Is it possible with the CPU bottleneck and if so what card should I go for?

today I seen a rx590 for $170 and a rx 5700 for $299 but from the comments it looks like those are overkill for my trash cpu
You also need a good power supply to run it.

I have to check when I get home but I believe I have a 550w 80+ gold or platinum fully modular Thermaltake

Not possible on that budget. You would have to replace the CPU to something considerably faster that could clock to 4.3 GHz(AMD) or 5.0GHz+ (Intel). Then you would have to replace the video card most likely.

AMD pricing is really good right now but to practically start over just for fortnite doesnt sound like a great idea.

ryzen 3600 $200
M-itx b450 $120
16gb 3000mhz ram $60
rx5700 $299
-100 bundle at microcenter =580+ tax

No. That's really good, and much nicer than pairing your current cpu with just a 580!
BUT. Is that one or two sticks of ram on that list? Please get a kit of two if it isn't. If you want to have higher minimum fps, 2 sticks is mandatory.

yes 2 sticks, its ADATA cl16 so not the greatest but it's like everyday theres a sale on RAM if you know where to look. G.skill, Corsair, Crucial are frequently on sale

I'll have to weigh my options

so after a few days of using a friends gtx970 and actually getting decent frames in fortnite 144+ I've decided to upgrade. Now I'll have to decide between 1440p and 144 fps or 1080p 240fps, probably the latter

There are a lot of factors here. You have to remember gamers are "muscle memory trained" to their inputs. One of the best Doom/Quake players in the world is using dial up. And there is a lot of lag here. (No I'm not B.S.'ing you)

Now if you want to go whole hog:
That said, look at monitor response time, as well as graphics card response time, and mouse response time. And use a quality Intel LAN chipset with a fast connection. Now throw in a quality DomaOS Router. A lot of hard core gamers still use CRT because there is 0 lag, as the tube display is directly tied to the analog timing output.

Depends on how hard core you want to be and how much you are willing to spend, and how good you think you are.

Also - why do you want to play at 240fps?

The human eye can't pick up that speed. I would be EXTREMELY dubious, without a blind study, of anyone who claims they can distinguish between, say, 120 and 144 fps, or 144 and 200fps, etc. Or who really claims ANY added clarity or better ability to play at 240fps vs, say, 100fps.

linus had a little video about it with a completely blind test and there was some variation in the 3 tests. mind you none of them were very skilled at the game. anyway since I'm already building it from scratch I might as well go all in for either 240fps 1080p or 144 with 1440p. most decent PC players are 1080p and 144hz for fortnite. al though I agree 240hz might be negligible I dont see $100 more towards a monitor a deal breaker

I did read a thread somewhere - either on TPU, or comment section for a 240hz monitor review - that even if people can't tell the difference between 120 - 240hz, the input lag is apparently even lower at that refresh rate on those monitors.

I thought also that some years back, and it's been a while so don't hold me to this, that there was an article on Tom's that did a blind study to see if people could tell if they were playing at 60fps vs 120fps.

Apparently, they mostly couldn't.

Or there might've been more values added in, rather than just those two.
