Could someone explain if they can, why what I did worked please as I'm new to networking.
I've got an OKI MC853 and it's wired into the local network (server with switch to all devices, I think classed as star topology?).
I went through the set up on the printer and copied the required network details (DNS/Default Gateway etc) from my PC but set the IP manually to something out of the DHCP range.
The printer appears under Network as a multi-function device in file explorer on each individual PC on the network. I wanted to add it to the server so that so that once you access the server you can click to add the printer driver and the printer as we had with our previous Konica printer.
On the server when I search for printers nothing is found automatically so I enter the IP for the printer and the port is filled in as the same automatically followed by _1. I search for the printer via this method and the server looks like it's recognized something but wants more details about the model but the list of printers is out of date.
At this point I tried something else. I checked the port number for the old Konica we had connected and under the protocol LDR was selected instead of Raw like it is for this OKI printer port. And SNMP was enabled. So I copied these details for the OKI IP address port but not the one followed by _1.
I went back to trying to add the printer to the server and following on from the paragraph before last there was an option for 'I have a disk' or something along those lines and I copied the driver information from the disk supplied with the printer to a server location and directed the server to use that driver file.
This looked like it worked and the printer and driver file were added so that individuals with network access could add the printer for use.
I'm not sure whether the port configuration was necessary and I'm not really sure what a port is in this scenario and what it does. I know the driver was essential for the printer to be added but would the driver file not have been recognized successfully if I hadn't changed the port settings?
I know there's nothing to solve here but if anyone has a brief run down or more information on ports or what's required by a server to add a printer for network users that would help me better understand. I know it's only adding one device to a network but got to start somewhere.
Thank you
