Question FPS drops from one day to the next with RTX 3060, seemingly out of nowhere ?

Hello everyone!

I am very happy to have discovered this community, and hoping that after months of struggle somebody can help me.

I have an issue where, one day I can run most games at high settings with no FPS problems, for example, Elden ring with nearly maxed out settings at stable 60 FPS, and CS2 at 200+ fps with default settings, however, the next day the story is different. Elden ring drops to 30-40 fps and CS2 at around 100. Note that no conditions have changed and that it's just a regular gaming night for me, but with much less fps. And the cycle repeats, I am posting this now out of frustration, but the issue might be resolved tomorrow, only to reoccur in a few days.

Here are some benchmark results I ran today:

UserBenchmarks: Game 96%, Desk 96%, Work 86%
CPU: Intel Core i5-10600KF - 92.5%
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060 - 101.2% (Driver updated today)
SSD: Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVMe PCIe M.2 500GB - 210.8%
SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB - 80.7%
RAM: HyperX Fury 2666 C16 2x8GB - 79.8%
MBD: Asus ROG STRIX B460-F GAMING
Dual monitor setup with both at 144 HZ, matching in-game refresh rates, however, when these low fps issues occur, alt-tabbing becomes much slower, and sometimes the screen gets dark for 2-3 seconds, when usually its instant.

I have been monitoring the temps, and nothing out of the ordinary, 45-50C for the CPU and 50 for the GPU with only the browser open, 70-80 in-game. AIO cooler (Kraken x53)

I tried enabling XMP profile 1 but that didn't change much.

Thank you in advance, I appreciate it.

update the BIOS to the latest version

check windows integrity
open the command prompt as administrator and type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

clean boot

check the memory by running memtest.org usb autoinstaller (bootable USB flash drive)

check the hard drive for errors with its manufacturer´s tool and if available, update the firmware

use ddu uninstaller and reinstall the latest graphics driver

Hello helpstar,

Thank you for the tips!

Just to be clear, the first 3 suggestions are a sequence I should perform, or just try them 1 by 1? I tried the windows integrity check, and now my game runs smoothly. I don't know if that will permanently fix the issue, but it seems to have now, so thank you!

My BIOS is in need of an update, thats for sure, as the version I am running is from 2020, however, just yesterday my house had 2 power cuts during the day, and I am deathly afraid of updating the BIOS and having a power cut, killing my board.

About the ddu uninstaller, i've tried many times to uninstall and reinstall different versions of the driver, yesterday I tried the latest 3 versions that came out from Nvidia, but nothing worked, unfortunately.

Not sure how to check the hard drive for errors though.

Once again, thanks for the feedback!

if it works for now, just let it run. if it happens agai, troubleshoot further
So the issue came back as expected.

I updated the BIOS, setup XMP profile 2 but kept it at 2666 mhz with just the default settings for that profile.

Performed a clean boot and turned everything off to better monitor the performance in Task manager.
Launched CS2 and unfortunately, it still stutters and doesn't reach a good fps potential. Checked task manager and CS2 consumes around 51% Memory, with nothing else open except task manager.

Does the ddu uninstaller have any risks, and is it much different than doing a rollback or updating the drivers? Is it worth checking out?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated

Thank you.

did you do this?
check the SSD for errors with Samsung Magician and if available, update the firmware"
I downloaded the Magician, did extensive checks on both SSDs, firmware and drivers up-to-date, no errors at all, even ran 1h scans on them, nothing.
The only thing I noticed is, when I enabled a Custom mode for the 860, and turned ON the Rapid mode, the app prompted a restart, once the PC restarted, the settings were back to normal and RAPID mode was disabled. I've restarted 5 times now, and RAPID mode never turns on, cannot use it.

Nothing new so far, keeps changing daily.

The issue seems to occur, whenever I am in-game on Monitor 1, and alt tab to monitor 2 to play a Youtube video. Noticed just now, my game was running smooth, alt tabbed to resume the video and then FPS suddenly dropped. Does this help.

Thanks
