fx9590 downclocking at safe temps

my fx9050 is downclocking when the core temp reaches ~55c -- which coincides with the socket temp ~50c

from everything I've read these are well within safe temps for this chip -- why is it downclocking?

What is your motherboard and PSU (and just about everything else in your system)?

I'm thinking that you are getting motherboard power delivery thermal throttling (VRMs). Thermal throttling of the CPU is when it gets too hot, thermal throttling of the motherboard is when the components on it, especially the power delivery and different from the socket temp., gets hot.

That chip can draw nearly 300W and there are very few motherboards with the power delivery to handle it well.

I dont see anything like that in AMD overdrive or CPU over drive?

This actually makes a lot of sense because i used to have CPU cooling issues, then I water cooled it -- but it still wasnt enough, so I was leaving the case open. Now with the case open, theres not proper airflow through the rest of the componants/motherboard to keep the rest cool.

I actually just bought a corsair obsidian 750d airflow and the hydro h115i Im hoping a large case (instead of the mid range one I have now will solve this issue)

so, now Im just curious as to the rest:

mobo: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3
power supply: APEVIA 900WATT
gpu: AMD RADEON R9 290X
ram: 2x ADATA XPG V2 8GB DDR3 1866MHZ

so -- if a better case and cpu cooling doesnt help -- and it is a problem with the VRMs or power/motherboard heat -- what do I do? Just buy a better mobo? which one?

I'll check it out -- is this different than amd overdrive or cpu overdrive that comes with CCC?

Don't know, probably not.

Good news, the UD3 is one of the boards that should work.
Your PSU is a bit weak (AMD recommends 1000W and that's not the highest performance product, which is actually a nice way of saying it's a piece of worthless junk I'd never use myself. APEVIA is Tier 5 HCF product, replace it quick)

We need to know the real temps first. If it is a motherboard issue, and it should not be, you can temporarily zip tie a case fan to blow directly on the VRMs (components between the socket and the rear I/O shield)

You may have to underclock and undervolt to get things under control.

Thanks for all your help -- it was a pre-built, and I just "upgraded" to a 900w from the 750 or whatever was comming with it. i shoulda paid more attention to the brand.

I've just ordered a corsair hx1000i between this and the new case -- (and maybe a small fan for the VRM) I think I've got a really good idea about how to go about fixing it.

Thanks again for everything!

a fan on the VRMs solved it. Its still not running suuuper good -- but between a better CPU cooler, a real case with awesome airflow, and a better PSU, I should be all set! Thanks!
