FYI: Your FRAME RATES and your SOUND CARD

system which I quoted the specs for on the previous page currently uses your tyical ac 97 audio chip

Yeah. AC97 plain stinks. I am rather confident that you will get both a performance increase and much better sound (unless you use some $hitty desktop speakers  )

EDIT: Ahem.. but I have to ask... Just how old an SB are we talking about? If it is SB 64 :? then no, stick with AC97
By the way, I just have to throw this out there: I have tried SB Audigy vs M-Audio Revolution 5.1, and the M-Audio blows it away in terms of audio fidelity. While the Audigy has better support for gaming, the sound quality was an issue for me (by the way, I haven't noticed any better support for gaming by Creative, but I have heard of cases where the Creative card has better HW support in some games).

M-Audio makes hardware for recording studios, and you can hear the difference. Check them out if you are an audiophile. Otherwise, you should roll with Creative.

Not everyone is natively english-speaking like you, not saying that GeneticWeapon isnt. And for your info, I often leave out apostrophes in wourds because Im lazy. I also often dont use capitals unless its the beginning of a sentence or its an 'I' (and even then I dont always do it), again because Im lazy and dont want to spend forever spell/gammar-checking. Also this is a hardware forum, not an english forum.
Good point. But, your post didn't really bug me. I'm not picking people apart for not using caps because they are in a hurry. I just find it annoying when people say stuff like "yer a moreon. mY soundbuster 16 AWI totally pwnz0rz your Audixy"

I don't mean to be a jerk, but the moral of this story is: at least take the time to cut and paste your post into a word doc and spell check it. Please?

Bravo, brother!

This kind of crap drives me nuts. Am I the only one???

There are (at least) two of us

Not everyone is natively english-speaking like you

Yo, GW is. Truth is that many people will say that they write/speak like illiterate rednecks because they are lazy or whatever but they are lying and giving bull$hit excuses.

Tell you what... I am Russian. I came to the USA in 1989. I was 23 years old then.

My full-time job is related to computers and networks.

My part-time job is .... care to guess?

...................................
...................................

I teach G0d damn Engli$h (in COLLEGE) to friggin' Americans who were BORN in America. Now, HOW f#$#ed up is THAT? What does that TELL YOU?

No. I totally agree with dean7: people MUST make an effort to (at least) spell well and show some respect to fellow members of the Forumz.

Granted, for some members English is a foreign language but it is inexcusable for native speakers to be so ... well, redneck-illiterate.

P.S. I've been itching to say all of the above for years. Thank you, dean7 for being braver than I am.

People are really starting to bug me when it comes to grammar and spelling.

As a bad speller myself, I do find it difficult to post. Bad grammar and spelling bothers me, but not for the same reason you do. Computers are an exact thing. What you say, and depending on how you word it, can change people ideas about the problem you're having. If you're going to get help for a problem, do your best at discribing it well enough using language people can understand. Thats really the only problem I have with people talk on forums.

HEY, WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST REDNECKS?????

M-Audio makes hardware for recording studios, and you can hear the difference. Check them out if you are an audiophile

Will do.

By the way, I've never heard of M-Audio (busy life, you know 😳 ). Thanks.

They're not very well known. I only know about them because my brother runs a recording studio.

HEY, WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST REDNECKS?????

Nothing really. Believe it or not I've done my share of manual labor. And it was not a small one. I worked in construction, at a furniture factory, as a janitor, as a mailman.... All in all, I'd say my "redneck" career was some 8 years long. So, there. Really. I am sure you know very well how I meant it when I referred to redneck-illiterate. Americans ARE illiterate and all my colleagues (in our college) concur. It is a shame.

Ha, ha I just found a typo in my own post  . And no thats not coz I cant spell, I just type too fast and dont watch what I'm doing.

EDIT: 'typo' sounds like I'm blaming the computer, so rather: I found a spelling mistake in my post.

EDIT-2: Prerhaps wwe shood gwt bck in tipic...

I do agree with you about the american school system. Even college grads are pretty bad. I do not understand how people can finish grade12, and still not know how to spell, how many continents the earth has, can't find Togo or India on a map, etc. Frankly, this is basic stuff that people should know, and stuff I knew by the time I was in 4th grade. I find it sad that people who immigrate here have a better understanding of US government then people who lived here all their life. Alas, this has nothing to do with improved frame rates, or better sound quality.

For ye shall find enlightenment: good quality sound depends on the DAC (Digital to Analog Converter), a relieved CPU depends on the hardware mixer/DSP (Digital Sound Processing).

You can have onboard sound with very good DAC but close to no hardware DSP, you can have an expansion card with a very good DSP but a lousy DAC... The thing is, if you care only about the sound quality then a very good onboard sound chip will do the trick (and there ARE good ones out there), but if you want to squeeze out the very last extra frame out of your system then an accelerated DSP is VERY important - to get an idea on the difference hardware acceleration can do, don't forget there's an acceleration slider in the Sound section of Windows' control panel.

Take your favourite benchmark (which uses sound), run it with the slider at minimum, then intermediary, higher, max, and compare; on unaccelerated hardware, 'higher' and 'max' should show little to no difference.

Personally on an old SB PCI 128 (I know, it's crap, but it was better than the primitive AC'97 on my KT266 board), I would get like 5% more frames when enabling maximum hardware acceleration - which, on a Duron 950, equaled being able to run Doom3 with limited playability compared with not running it at all.

Note: I'm no native English speaker - still, I type the best I can.

Hey, same here in Quebec. I gave grammar lessons to plenty of my schoolmates in college and they didn't know what a proposition or a "complément d'objet direct" was. I mean, they were 19-20 year old native Quebecers. And that's about the majority of them.

It's all primary school's fault. They think that children should not be forced to learn stuff the hard way, so they find crappy "new" and "revolutionnary" ways that imply working much less and doing only meanless homework. Those who govern us know very well that the majority shouldn't be too bright if they want to stay in place.

Right you are, friend. The very purpose of this society could be described like this: "Train narrow-minded, highly specialized, obedient and materialistic workforce, brainwash it with commercials to stimulate consumerism and they will never rebel - even if they realize that democracy is failing - because they have no time or ability to think about anything except ways of making more $$ to be able to afford that carzilla of an SUV."

Bacon cheeseburgers for everyone! Hurray!

P.S. Fortunately, some people manage to resist brainwashing and escape the grasp of the sad reality they are forced to live in. So to all of you who think and feel - I salute you.

Bravo Slava!!! :trophy: :trophy: :trophy:

This is one of the best posts I have seen in a long time. And its all 100% true. Thank you for your clear concise presentations of the facts.

It's so obvious sound cards give you higher quality sound and game performance. The illogic that onboard sound lovers use to justify their non purchase of real sound cards...bugs me to no end!!

To those of you who like onboard sound, thats fine with me. Your ignorance of the facts is your own choice. But please stop misinforming people about onboard vs. real sound cards.

Sadly yes, they've dumbed down the education here in the states. God forbid they should make you work for your grade. They just make it easier so certain people don't feel left out and stupid because they can't pass a course, or earn their diploma. And don't get me started on Affirmative Action.

Nice thread though Slava. :)

On-board sound blows. If you can't hear the difference, get your ears checked. As for frame rates, for the average rig it helps. I plunked in a SB Live! Platinum card into my old rig and suddenly I could use M$ Flight Simulator. I don't know what the frame rates were, and I don't care. It's the End Use that matters.

Also, my old M$ joystick wasn't XP compatible, but the Device Manager said it was fine. Buying a new stick (Logitech) doubled my framerates.

P.S. I hate you guys. This forum blows chunks.

Finally, someone is over exaggerating the benefits of a dedicated soundcard. The only real benefit gained from a dedicated soundcard is the improved sound quality.

Heyyou27, I hate to bother you, but is your image a scene from the Jonestown massacre?

Off subject I know. My sincere apoligies, but I must know.

High regards,
HowardYes it is.

I'd like to tell you a Jim Jones joke, but the PUNCHLINE is too long.

Hey kaotao,
would love to hear it. It's not like these posts ever go off subject...LOL

That WAS the joke. Get it... Jonestown massacre... they drank poison koolaid... the punchline is too long... get it? :)

EDIT: typo

LMAO!! Hilarious. Sorry man, I'm not too bright at times.

Thanks! 😀

I prefer the education debate to the sound card debate, on this thread. Ok ok sound cards are cool now let's rant about society a bit more.

Oh, and Slava, I so agree with you on that last point. You're spelling out my very thoughts.

Ever read "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley?

I tell you what, in all honesty, I would rather sift through ungodly amounts of poorly written(or spelled) posts, than be forced to continue looking at that homosexual-esque picture of you in your freaking avatar.

I really hope that's not you, because if it is, you're pretty stupid for letting other people see it for. You could of even given us a warning or something.

You can cheer on some guy who picked out some bad spot's in my spelling all you want, but at least I dont look like you.

You sound like a third-grader, GW. Pathetic.
