Question Got a new motherboard, PC worked fine for days, now when it turns on it IMMEDIATELY turns off.

Hey guys, so I just replaced the motherboard on my NZXT prebuilt PC (related to a prior issue I was having with my PC which ended up being a SSD with a corrupted Windows user folder but otherwise still accessible and with the personal files all still fine), I just got a new SSD along with that new motherboard after moving those personal files over, it worked fine for a few days, I always shut it down properly through windows, but as of today now when I turn it on, even with no peripherals connected, it boots up, the fan spins, lights come on, then the CPU debug light flashes for a second right before it COMPLETELY shuts off.

I've tried booting it up with only one ram stick and in different slots, same issue. I've never had any PSU issues with this PC before.

Do you have any ideas? All of my hard drives were fine, but now it doesnt even get to the splash screen. The monitor slightly lights up like it's getting power, but then, blam, it instantly shuts off.

Could something be seated improperly? When I got that new motherboard, I had a repair guy basically rebuild this PC, but again, it worked fine for almost an entire week. It was working completely fine even just last night!

I do have new ram sticks coming in tomorrow but I'm not sure if this is a RAM issue.

The PC is a NZXT creator PC from 2022. z490 motherboard, intel i9, 64 gb ram distributed over 4 sticks, 3090 ti graphics card.

Small update: my repair guy said the cpu light flashing right before it shuts off is normal, he thinks it has to be the RAM.

He already tested the PSU on this PC and it read as normal. He gave me hard drive adaptors to read my HDD and SSD's, which I will do with a spare PC shortly, just to make sure they're fine and back them up to an external hard drive.

I will update this thread shortly on the condition of my hard drives.

good and bad news : (

Both SSDs are fine, but my secondary drive, my HDD " D : "drive doesn't read. Tried opening it in disk management and it said "Disk 1 unknown" And didn't even show storage capacity, when trying to read it through a SATA cable on an external PC (same pc I'm using to read my two SSDs from that PC)

My repair guy said that this might be a security thing and it might only be able to be read through a motherboard on my PC maybe, but I fear the worse, I had absolutely no issues with that only 2 year old HDD and it was working just fine last night.

I highly doubt anything on my PC could have toasted it since it was a secondary drive, the SSDs that the PC boots to, the ones with windows on em, were absolutely fine.

So now I'm waiting on new ram to try to fix up my old PC and read the HDD through it

Do we know though if this "security" thing is a real thing? The 2.5 SATA slot fits.. in theory it should work, is there any reason I should expect only to be able to read it through a motherboard? I cant even hear the HDD start spinning up when I plug it in.

Hey there,

Take out all drives except for the boot drive. Still the same?

When you got the new SSD and Mobo, did you do a fresh windows install, or did you clone the old drive with the OS on it? And then just boot up?

We installed windows on a new SSD, and then moved folders from the old SSD to the new one

We didn't do anything to the HDD though, it didn't have windows installed on it

if this drive was connected when the OS was installed then Windows will use it as part of the installation.

that is why it is always recommended to remove all drives except the intended OS drive when installing.
ccould that be why I cant read the HDD through an external PC? I can read both SSDs (windows installed on em,) just fine

But when using a SATA cable the HDD shows up as "disk 1 unknown"

This motherboard?

https://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/mb/E7C79v1.1.pdf

Do verify that I found the applicable motherboard.

Some motherboards, including the above, require that the first physically install RAM be placed in a specific slot. Commonly DIMMA2.

Reference numbered Page 28.

Pay close attention to all 6 red bulleted items under Important.
it was this motherboard yes, me and the repair guy will be attempting to fix this with new rams tomorrow

Now my only concern is my HDD, I have no idea why I cant read it with a SATA cable through an external PC

Either its bit locked to that PC OS (not sure why the SSDs are still readable tho)

OR, the SATA to USB cable isn't enough to power it (makes sense, I cant hear any spinning when I plug it in)

the SATA to USB cable isn't enough to power it
SATA to USB would only be a data cable.
the drive would still need a connection for power.

is this converter connected to both or only SATA?
repair guy will be attempting to fix this with new rams tomorrow
if this "repair guy" doesn't know what he's doing then you may be wasting a lot of money using them.

why don't you follow recommendations here beforehand?

Only SATA to usb, no other cables. If that's true and it just needs power, thank goodness.

A 2.5" ssd can be powered by a single usb cable. A 3.5" HDD device requires more power.
Yeah all sources I can find say that a seagate barracuda 4tb is 3.5'' its a pretty beefy hard drive. (around 4 inches wide and 6 inches long) That would make sense why I can read the two ssds with an adapter though they're small

There's no way, with a new motherboard, a tested PSU, and an only 2.5yo HDD just up and dies when it worked PERFECTLY just 24 hours ago.

I pray that the issue is simply that a 2.5'' cable does not provide it enough power, hense why it shows up in file explorer for a second then disappears, and shows up as unknown in disk manager, the thing isn't even spinning

that is definitely not true.
any drive can die at any time.
you will find million of instances where brand new drives even fail upon first use.

that is why backup routines are necessary;
for important data make a backup to a secondary drive,
and then make a copy of that backup to a third drive.

thats true, Ive already backed up my 2 ssds, sucks that this issue occurred right before I was going to back up the HDD

But its the case that you cant spin up a 3.5 4tb internal HDD with a 2.5 SATA to USB cable correct? that would explain why I cant read my HDD but can read my SSDs using external PCs?
