Graphics Memory Question

I recently bought GTA IV and quickly realized it was time to upgrade my aging 8800 GTX with 768 Ram, I don't have enough graphics memory to enable all the features.. unacceptable!

I'm eyeing Geforce 260 and 275 cards that claim to have 1792 megs of RAM. Presumably this is actually two chipsets crammed into one card with 896 ram each.

Will the game see the graphics card as having 896 megs or 1792?

Even if 896 is enough to max out GTA IV.. that next big game is certainly comming down the line and I want to have plenty of video memory avalable for it!

They are both single chip cards so will have the whole 1792 to themselves. A dual chip card would split the ram and for memory purposes would be the same as two cards with 896 in SLI. Which would mean the total available would be efectivly 896.

The way it works is that a standard 260/275 has (14) 64MB [512 megabit] memory chips. When they step up to 1792 they use (14) 128MB [1024 megabit] memory chips. Same number of chips, but each each chip's capacity is doubled.

do you have a quad core processor? because GTAIV prefers the quad core's.

At the moment no, but I plan to upgrade to a quad core at the same time I upgrade the graphics card.. nothing says hardcore PC Gamer like spending $500 to play a $50 Game!
