ok OBVIOUSLY the 5870 DESTROYS the nvidia lineup up and down. nobody would pay $500 for a gtx 295 when you can pay a lot less for around the same performance with much less watts used + cooler cpu + smaller nm size. shutup nividia fanboys - you got totally destroyed by ATi.

nvidia really tried to take a risk by building a gpu from the ground up thinking it would revolutionize the gpu market but absolutely fell flat when they realized they were in over their heads. IF nvidia, and i said IF, they had succeeded in building a monster gtx300 then ATi would be in trouble... but they didnt... and they wont. gj ati!

first of all, they didn't get DESTROYED
seconde of all.....that's new generation vs old gen your talking about
but one thing you are right about, is that it's one gpu(5870) vs 2in1(gtx295)

Back on track, a Novemeber release makes the most sense, and given we recently had that yields test, the reports of the GT300 taping out actually make sense this time around.

I've said it before: NVIDIA is quiet for one of two reasons: Either they have a dud that can't compete, or want to hide a monster from AMD. Heck, Maybe they were waiting for AMD so they know what they have to beat...?

We'll see in a month. Right now, theres no rush to upgrade, especially if NVIDIA can get a card out this year (potentially faster performance, and starting a price war), especially since current cards aren't taxed in most games at this point.

well yes it would be the same generation, if they release something 12 months later, wouldn't that mean they've fallen behind?
basically, a whole generation behind

anyway, I hope the Gt300 will have agressive pricing, something around the 5850 would be awesome if they could pull that one off

Thing is... if you were Nvidia, and you even thought you had a monster (never mind were sure of it), would you not be out proclaiming it to everyone to stop them from spending their money on a 5870?

Someone that upgrades to a 5870 now is unlikely to upgrade again in 3 months time, even if the GT300 is 25-50% quicker (simply due to the FPS limits being high enough to play virtually everything on max).

If Nvidia have a monster card - they are directly losing prospective sales by keeping quiet.... and keeping quiet is not something Nvidia have been particularly good at in the past is it? 😉

Shrinking G200 wont help Nvidia but loose more. Even if they shrink G200 and for example make the price of GTX260 $130(which is very much competitive price) but Ati is going to launch the 5750(which maybe seems to be a bit better than 4870 and rumored to replace the 4870 that means on par or mayb a bit tad better than 260) at a price of $149(~150) then people will actually pay $20 more for new 40nm architechture, hardware tessellation and blah blah and ofcourse DX-11 for more future proofing. And we can see that Ati pretty much maintaining the rumored price(the 5870 is rumored to be 399 and is going for 380!!). So the only chance for Nvidia is getting new architechture and get those GT300 series out of the box and ofcourse before christmas to save some market share.

GT220...any guesses what that is supposed to be competing against? The 4670 possibly.

That's exactly it, ATI is making a great showing at the sub $200 market, especially if the HD 5750/5770 are 10-20% faster than the HD 4870/4890. Since Nvidia never managed to shrink G200, I think a lot of people who might be looking at these cards won't wait, 'cause it could be a LONG time before they see an Nvidia response.

I know i've said this before, but they need to rebrand the gtx 275, as something like gtx 350, sell it for 150$
now that would be good stuff

or they should make gtx3xx around 250$, although i'm sure they won't 😛

The very tempting reason for people to force in the market to buy the new Ati cards is the "price" and "price/performance". They have set the price SO REASONABLE and pretty much low that u can buy these cards and u will be satisfied even after 6months because i guess the price wont fall that much(as the launch price is pretty much already low). From me what i think the frustating thing is buying a card and seeing the price drop almost half after 6month and i dont think its going to happen for the 5xxx series. The price will drop ofcourse but not that much i think. So people who buy at launch may not be loosing much and actually gaining lot. I think this is what actually Ati targeted. Make the launch price pretty lower and make it pretty constant over some period because at those price it will be very hard for Nvidia to compete unless they think about lowering the price aggresively to grab the market. Then maybe we can see a GTX260 for $120 and less 😀 and thats good for us CONSUMERS!

problem is, gt300 will maybe cost $600? it will still be hard for me to justify that when i can get 2x 5850's for that price

i would like to see gt 300 how they BEAT that 5870 and to shut up these ati fanboys. You are so scared about gt 300 that you want to screw nvidia. i cant believe.

Yeah, I hope NVidia can pull this of. The one comment of John's I agree with 100% is we need competition. We saw what happened after NVidia's 8800 and ATI's relative failure, or rather what didn't happen: innovation. That's why I really hope NVidia can beat the 5870 by a decent margin, because otherwise it will be a failure, as I'd be really surprised if they could pull off a reasonable X2 version with that massive chip. And on top of all that, they need a decent low-mid line, because the high is what's advertised, but the low-mid is what gets sold.

i agree if one company is leader they want to make a lot money producing same chips nothing inovative like nvidia did last couple times

I'm not scared of seeing the Gtx 3XX beat the 5870.

I'm scared of seeing it beat the price of an i7-975 😱
