Hello Everyone!

Since GW2 became free to play recently I decied to give it a go. After playing for a while, I noticed the game would randomly freeze up. Oddly enough as I minimzed it on the tray and brought it back up it went on without problems only to freeze again after a while. At first I tought it was lagspikes or DCs since I have crappy net, but this wasn't that. I can see inside my case from above and I saw that during the freeze the vga went back to idle because only 1 led indicator was on. I also use HWinfo to monitor temps and stress of various parts, but no overheating whatsoever, and more demandig games like Witcher 3 run without any problems.

My specs: Core i5 4570 @ 3.6 Ghz turbo, 8 gb DDR3 ram, Sapphire R9 280x Tri-x

Thanks in advance for the help!

Update: Last night I played with HWinfo on and when it froze again I checked and one of the CPU cores showed 10 Ghz!!!! sadly I didn't take a screenshot, but now I'm afraid to play at all. So it's safe to say the CPU is the problem...

IS the DRAM running at 1600 (i.e. under XMP) or is at the defaults, think it might possibly be the PSU, it's marketed as a 550 (which is it's peak, it only carries about 500 on the 12 volt rail, believe Sapphire suggest at least a 600, if I were building would want a stronger 550

According to CPU-Z DRAM frequency is 798.1 Mhz so that seems fine.

Concerning the PSU: I know it's not the best, but sadly in my country the ones by Seasonic or XFX are way more expensive. The vga is clocked at 1100 Mhz so it draws quite a lot of power. The PSU has 42 amps on the 12V rail and according to extreme psu calculator I use 39 so its true I'm pushing it to the limit. It's 1 year old and so far I have played some demanding games like Assassin's Creed 4, Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3, Batman Arkham Origins and Witcher 3. I have never experienced any freezing during any of those games that's why I think the issue is not hardware related. I also ran Intel's CPU diagnostic tool, and the cpu passed every test.

Fun fact: For month or so, I had an FSP Hexa 500 in the rig and it ran fine altough it only had two 18A rails on 12V instead of a single one. During gaming it screeched like a barn owl but ran fine, I changed it as soon as possible ofc.

Do you run a backup software or Antivirus software that makes periodic checks? I too enjoy GW2, and if left to its own devices will sometimes revert to Taskbar. If I disable my Norton 360, this is solved. For me it's an incompatibility somewhere in the software,

Got Avast and Windows Firewall running, I let it trough firewall but no change...

If Google Drive and Onedrive count, I have those running, nothing else.

I just downloaded the game on my HP Elitebook 8770 and am having the same issue. I have the game on my desktop as well but this freezing does not happen on that. I have firepro m4000 graphics and i5 3000m series cpu so its not a bad laptop for gaming. the only way to get it to not freeze is to minimize the game and reopen the minimized tab than I can play again.
