Heatsink Replacement

I am cobbing together a PIII comp for basic use. I need to know what to use to clean the material off of the cpu and the heatsink without damaging either. Then when that is done what should I use to replace it? I'm trying to keep the cost as low as possilble so I really didn't want to have to go out and buy Arctic Silver or something like that... Thanks! 😀

Any high alcohol spirit (not the drinking kind) - 70%+ is good.
Any generic thermal paste will do.

Use a thermal paste.. the latest info is that the make or advertising makes little difference.. but use some! (Lots cheaper than a chip....)
