Hey guys, I'm selling off a P4 3.2 Northwood + AGP GeForce 6800GT and some other parts to upgrade my system... here is what I am looking at:



$115 ThermalTake or Antec Case
--> any case recommendations? I like the many fans, screwless entry of the Thermaltake. I like the black. However, I like the look of the front of the Antec better, and also the Antec is much lighter weight.

$100 Antec TruePower 2.0 550W PSU
--> OR: $150 600W Seasonic PSU...... which one should I go with, or another one...?

$510 BFG GeForce 7800GTX 256mb (monarch computer)
--> OR: $360 BFG GeForce 7800GT 256mb (after $30 MIR, newegg)... what do you think, is it worth it to splurge and get the GTX? I usually don't for top of the line because of the extra price... but I dunno... advice?

$220 AMD 3500+ Venice
--> this seems to be the best buy for a processor right now. The X2s are still just so spendy... anyone disagree with this proc choice?

$140 SLI/SATAII/Deluxe-type mobo // Asus or Abit or Epox
--> not sure which one to go with. Any recommendations? Or is there a better brand I haven't listed right now? I want to swap in an X2 down the road sometime when they are cheap...

$150 1GB Corsair/Kingston PC3200 high speed, high qual RAM
--> or other brand. I've consider 2GB... any RAM recommendations?

$150 300gb+ SATA/SATAII Hard Drive (Seagate Preferrably)
--> Need some more storage... any disagreements here?

I'm keeping: speakers, monitor, soundcard, 2xSATA Hard Drives, floppy, DVD burner

just a note for the case....the thermaltake case is the tsunami right? if so i have the black thermaltake tsunami case and would like to point out that the fan noise is pretty loud
 
I think I've decided on the new Antec P180 case...

Any feedback on the rest of my build out would be GREATLY appreciated...

or you can SAVE a [-peep-] load of money and just upgrade your current system and wait for prices to just dramatically drop.

OC that P4 and Throw in a Killer GFX.. maybe add some more mem...... and in the worse case... if you do buy everything new... the stuff you upgraded with you can use it in the new system... just whatever you buy to upgrade just make sure it's future proof so you will be able to use it with your next setup... just adding some memory and a gfx should do justice to the rig.

Yeah that was my original plan, to upgrade current, but I am feeling "stuck" with my current rig. My plan was to sell the P4c components I have (case/psu/proc/mobo/memory/GFX/dvd + HD) for around $900 if I can find someone interested, I have a couple potential but nothing for sure.

The current is AGP socket 478 & 380W psu... if I just sell the stuff and replace with a socket 939, PCI-E w/SLI mobo & get a better case/550W psu I feel like I'll have a better and more "future-proof" platform.

ah dammit, that AGP is holding you back. Well you know what... try to sell it. if you can't i wouldn't be to annoyed. I mean do you do some crazy gaming? if you don't i'd just add some more memory and get a nice agp card. that system could probley last you an easy year or more.

try to OC the cpu just a tad.

LESS SALE: $900 (from current P4-Northwood system)

just one quick question...


the graphics card... how is that brand?

im just asking cause isn't that chipset the highest available for GeForce, or atleast one of the highest... that seems alittle low on price for the best graphics card.

just wondering why it was so cheap... and just wanted to know if you used their products before and if so how are they?

many consider BFG to be the best... I have used them for my 6800GT that I currently have. They are OC'ed cards, out of box, with 24/7 tech support + lifetime warranty. Google a review for more info.

Why so cheap? It's after a mail-in-rebate... woohoo... ends 10/15/05 though so I gotta jump on it :)

I've got a P-160, and I helped (well basically built for him) a friend move his system into a P-180, and I can honestly say I prefer the P-160. the P-180 has some interesting ideas, but the P-160 is simply a better design. The removable motherboard tray makes installing nice and simple, and the 90* drive installation is just easier to maintain and play with.

My overall impression is that the P-180 would be more suitable as a sort of 'home-brew server' case than a 'normal' rig.

I'd like to play around with that one. think I'd rather get that than the P180.

But I don't feel ripped off over the P-160. It's undeniably a great case (just not cheap). No regrets there.

Yet, I dunno, I'm still liking the P180. I like how it isolates the heat from the PSU and the mobos, and how the cpu is at the top by two exhaust fans - should help keep things nice & cool.

I also like the look & design - it's simple, refined, and very high quality build. I like what I've read of it from the reviews. And it's supposedly a very quiet case.

The hard drive setup doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I'm using all SATA so the cables are thin, and I rarely remove the HDs once installed. When I need to, disconnecting a couple SATA cables is a breeze...

Well, I've worked on both and I just don't feel the P-180 is worth the extra money, in build quality or features.

The P-160 just seems like a really well thought out design, whereas the P-180 seems like a few good ideas thrown together with less thought.

Just my opinion of course.

Well, I'd like to see how the whole windtunnel thing works.

ALthough the weird back-front case design would do my head in I think... I'd keep taking the wrong side off all the time :lol:
