hello everyone,

always come here for help, so im back again..
im going to buy a new processor soon for my pc because im using it more now,

current spec is:
athlon ii x3 425 @ 3.2ghz (4th core is dead) with xigmatek loki
asus sabertooth 990 fx mobo
12gb corsair xms3 1333
radeon hd 6870 (getting another and new psu later on in the year aswell)
120gd sandisk extreme ssd
1tb western digital hdd
dvd rw
corsair cx 500 psu

currently win7 rating for cpu is 6.9 i would like the new one to be better than this, im not bothered about hitting 7.9 thought lmao

i will have about £150 to spend on the new cpu.
ive been looking at phenom ii x6 1xxx and fx-8xxx but i dont know what to get

ill be using the computer mainly for gaming, but converting films, abit of cad and browsing aswell
any help with this is much appreciated

thanks alot
marc

Well honestly you are not going to find a Phenom II x 6 1090 or 1100, if you can get a good price on a 8120 it should be more than copious for you needs, the FX chips in converting and rendering do well.

how does the fx-8120/8150 do in gaming?? i will proberly be OC'ing the new chip
ive seen a 1045t on scan.co.uk for £96 was thinking bout overclocking that to about 3.2 to 3.5 region???

If you're not opposed to buying used products, there's a used 1090T on Amazon.co.uk for about £125 - as far as I can tell, it's just the CPU though, no heatsink. Though I'd imagine you'd want an aftermarket cooler anyway.

There's also several listings for a little less than that on brand new (read: factory sealed) 1045Ts (non-black edition).

Beyond that, there's always the brand new FX-8120 for ~£125 on Scan.

@nekulturny: Don't get your hopes up - they've got a listing for the 960T that's also "on backorder," but I called them up and they don't have any at all, and won't be getting anymore.

Yea, but for your multi-threaded work, an overclocked 1100T performs well enough against similarly priced Intel i5s that it wouldn't be a total pisser in terms of money. But no, I woudln't get any Thuban that isn't black edition (thats 1075T and up, I believe), I think you'd be better off with an x4 Deneb and overclocking it, (Theres plenty of 965 Phenom IIs still floating around)

Aww, oh well..

Mousseng,
aww, well thanks for letting me know, I was thinking about calling em up myself, but 192 just seemed like too much considering my 975 does everything I need it to do and more as it is. It would have just been a "because I can" rather than a practical upgrade. They really should pull the link if people are still ordering a product that will never be replenished, oh well.

If your primary concern is gaming get this

http://www.cclonline.com/product/26600/HDZ965FBGMBOX/CPUs/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-965-Black-Edition-3-4GHz-Quad-Core-Processor/CPU1046/

It will clock higher than a 1045T (the 1045 has a locked multi its a pain to OC far) and game better than FX mostly.

i dont really want a used chip, i want to put it through its paces myself lol..
well i bought a xigmatek loki cooler a while ago now and doesnt seem to get past 43 degrees after about 4hours on skyrim, ghost recon future soldier, fallout new veges etc..

well i do like the look of fx, because it support higher ram than just 1333 which im at now lol

cheers

well scan have also got 965t's in stock aswell for about the same price, ive looked at x4 aswell but didnt know what to get at all.. to much choice today..
well a black edition it will be, easier to oc because of unlocked multiplier.
but what though? 965t,1090t or 8120/8150?

what will OC the highest and be stable?

cheers

If you really want FX you should at least wait for Piledriver and the 10% performance boost it may bring.

From a gaming perspective spending £50 more on FX than Phenom II gets you less performance in many games as can be seen here (at stock or OC'd)

FX 81xx is only going to come in to its own if your primary use is X264 HD encoding or working in 3DS Max and akin tasks.

If you can afford it, I'd get the phenom II 980. It's a quad core chip running at 3.7 GHz. It'll run you about $190, but it it well worth it as it is the best quad core AMD chip out right now.

Or you could just wait until piledriver and see what it's got to offer.

965BE - Is a native X4 its reasonable to get too the 4GHz mark with them (this is the same chip as a 980BE or a 955BE just different starting speeds)

960T - Is a native X6 with 2 cores locked down (making it an X4) similar OC's to the above and it MAY unlock to a 1600T X6 core

1090T - Is a native X6 again expect similar OC's these are rare and expensive now though onl;y worth it if you really really need an X6

FX 81xx - Is a Pseudo 8 core (not 8 real independent cores) in some highly threaded work it will do well but in gaming it will lose out in many things or draw equal to the older and cheaper Phenoms

OP you would be crazy not to jump on that 1090T even used, cpu's are now the only part I would consider buying used they have so much thermal protection now the likelyhood of a damaged cpu is really slim to none.

If he had a higher budget, I'd be suggesting this as well. Unfortunately, £150 doesn't even get you the i5, let alone the i5 and motherboard - he'd be looking at £230 with the used mobo you linked.

So it would, so it would. The Sabertooth is a very high quality motherboard though, and I'm still not sure I'd want to get rid of it and replace it with an older, used P67 board - especially when he'd either have to sell it first to afford the Intel gear, or spend over his budget and wait for someone to purchase the board. That's OP's call, though.

Yeah i can see the solution is probably the Phenom II older generation the x6 10** or x4 9**
Cuz u can go with it and if u want upgrade like a few years later u can go with later launching newer generation bulldozers n stuff.
