Help in selecting new GPU

I'm in the market for a new video card but I am out of the loop as to what is good these days.

My rig:
Q6600 @ 3.2
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
2GB Kingston HyperX PC2 8500
PC Power and Cooling - Silencer 750 Watt
EVGA 7900GS KO

I am grabbing more ram to hit 4GB total and I can spend up to $300.00 for a new video card.

Any suggestions for best performance card that my rig can handle?

Tell us the resolution of your monitor.
The HD5850 is, indeed a superb card, but I would hessitate to recommend one if the monitor is 16x10 or less.

Hope you mean 1680x1050 as a 1920x1200 and 2560x1600 are both 16:10 and everything else is less.

As for the op. If you have a card to hold you over I would wait to jump on the dx11 bandwagon till the nvidia cards are released and prices drop. If you need now there are only one real choice to go and that is ati dx11.

My monitor is a 19 inch dell, 1280x1024 I believe.

I just want to be able to play the newer games that are out now (and make them looks great) and be ready for future games.
