Hello,

I am running an older system and decided after many years to try to get a new CPU. I ordered it but now am concerned about installing it as I cannot find any good information on whether or not I need a BIOS update in order for it to work.

My current CPU: Intel Core i5-2300 @ 2.80GHz (4CPUs), ~2.8GHz
New CPU: Intel Core i7-3770 Quad-Core Processor 3.4 GHz
Motherboard: Alienware 046MHW (Says Baseboard version A00)
BIOS: BIOS Date: 05/25/11 09:41:30 Ver: 04.06.04

This is the first time I'm trying to install a CPU and I'm not feeling great about installing it to test if it works, would rather have some understanding on if it will or will not function once installed, and what I would need to do

Another thing is on the website for the motherboard it gives only 1 link to a BIOS update which claims to not be able to run windows 10 and I don't understand if it would even be an upgrade from the current version of BIOS that my computer is running, as I am able to run W10 currently

Please help, I am so utterly confused.

OEM boards are a bit risky to hop between generations. They don't always receive appropriate updates.

As far as I can tell, the general answer is no, the BIOS will not recognize a 3770.

i7-2600 would be your best bet if you can find one.
