Hello all,

So, I got a PC donated to me and was wondering what CPUs are compatible with the MB. (Did not come with a CPU)

MB: SUPERMICRO X8SIU-F - LGA1156 Socket - i3420 Series
Processor Socket - LGA1156 Socket, H, H1
Chipset Type - Intel 3420
Compatible Processors - Pentium, Celeron, Quad-Core Xeon 3400 series, Core i3

I was looking at a i7-880 or "SLBPS"

The socket is the same, but is it too new for the MB?
My main goal is to upgrade my PLEX media PC, so what is the top 3 to 5 processors I can put in this PC?

Thanks for all the help.

Current Setup: (has a LGA 1155, not a 1156)
AsRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3
i5-2500k 3.3 Ghz

Supported CPUs
  • LGA 1156 Socket
  • Intel® Xeon® X3400 series
  • Intel® Xeon® L3400 series
  • Intel® Core™ i3
  • Intel® Pentium® G6950
  • Intel® Celeron® G1101
The Core i7-880 does not appear to be supported.

Note: Supports 1-Gb and 2-Gb x8 devices only - Intel 3420 / 3400 Chipset Memory Requirements

Note
  • All X3400 series and L3426 CPU support RDIMM and UDIMM
  • All i3 series, L3406, G6950, and G1101 CPU support UDIMM only
RDIMM is Registered memory
UDIMM is Unbuffered memory

Motherboard Form Factor
  • Proprietary

OS Compatibility

"upgrade my PLEX media PC"
This is a server motherboard. I would not recommend it for the purpose you list. Note the supported OS in the above link.

So I am looking up the best CPU for this Spuermicro MB and I am seeing a Xeon X3480 - LGA 1156, but it seems that from the X3460 to the X2480 it goes from Gen 1 to Gen 2. Would this processor work?

Thank you for all your help.
