Help with sys crash after AMD K6-2 upgrade

System pre:
- Gigabyte GA-5SMM with SiS 530 chipset and integrated audio/video - more details at http://www.giga-byte.com/products/products.htm
- crappy BIOS 2A5IMG09C
- Cyrix MII-366GP @ 250MHZ 2.5x100
- 128MB SDRAM
- 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 16MB RAM on PCI
- 4GB HDD
- OS Win XP Pro
Upgrade:
- AMD K6-2 @500MHZ 5x100
- BIOS flash to latest version
- rest the same.
Results:
- significantly better performance
- however ocasional crashes:
One crash looked like the CPU got to hot - the machine just turned itself off. Most of other crashes happen during games (Counter Strike)running in GL mode and they act as short resets - as if you pressed reset button. Here's my suspicions:
1. Crappy CPU - although I doubt it
2. Crappy fan on the heatsink - it's couple years old, has instable RPMs and is noisy - maybe that causes the CPU to overheat, but I thought that if you overheat it it will just turn itself off, and my problem is reset
3. Something is not jiving with my video card and maybe in high load conditions it resets itself - maybe
4. Something's wrong in the BIOS
Does anybody have any idea how to identify the cause of it?

Sounds like an overheating problem. You mentioned that the HSF you are using is on it's last legs, and the apps you were running put strain on the CPU, heating them up. Check into if a new HSF would work for you.

:tongue: Have you ever tried cooking an egg on your HSF? Tasty. :tongue:

These things put out a lot of heat, use a socket PIII/Athlon cooler, and yes they do fit.

I had the distinct unpleasant expeirance of working with a system built on one of these baords (GA-5SMM). It is a complete POS. I had it running somewhat stable using a k6-2 350 but when I tried to upgrade it to anything faster ran in to a host of instability problems. The only thing that finally resolved most of the issues was by using a k6-3+ 450 CPU ( as opposed to the k6-3). Fortunatly this board is one of the few that does support this chip. The only reason I could conclude that the + series would make a difference over the normal k-63 was due to the fact the plus series consumed less power. This leads you back to either the power supply or the voltage regulator on the motherboard itself, and as I was using a 300 watt power supply that ran an classic athlon 950 on another system just fine I made the conclusion that it was the board itself. Do yourself a favor and ditch the board.

Putting together what I can read here and on the web, just curious, still don't know but woiuld like to know is/was the SiS from Gigabyte a good workable product (for certain processor models) or crap? Or there's a driver issue?
