So you get absolutely no output showing on either of two different VGA monitors. The video card must be suspected.

Does this card need a power supply fitting directly from the PSU (a 6-pin connector), or does it get all power from the slot it is in. I suspect it is in an AGP slot.

No driver needed for the BIOS to dispaly. You are not getting bios display, therefore not Operating system problem.

Does the display come out of standby when you hit power button on PC, display the "my monitor just says check video cable " message you report, and then go back to sleep? Or does this message just appear when you power on monitor?

There is a reset procedure for bios on MB. Have you done that ?

re: "computer does the normal beeps " The BIOS uses beep codes to communicate with you if it cannot display video correctly. The codes are unique to the bios vendor. IF you are using an award bios then 1 long, 2 short beeps means video adapter error. Try removing and reseating the video card. 1long, 3short No video card or bad video RAM Reseat or replace the video card. http://www.bioscentral.com/beepcodes/awardbeep.htm#

Aside: If you get bored debugging then $100 buys you an AMD E350 based MB, CPU, video that (with 4GB ddr3 = $35) will game vs. the kid's system you are building which won't. (winfast a360 256mb = no shader model3 = no game)

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-e-350-atom-d525-nvidia-ion-2,2905-10.html look at e350 results.

p.s. if you are using this system for win XP make sure you are on service pack 3 before trying to use this MB. If your current disk is IDE, then you'd need a disk too and you are getting into the $200 range, which probably doesn't make sense.
