jaydee, you missed the point of The Ugly American. The Ugly American was the good guy. Anyone who doubts me needs to read the book, not just quote the title.
jennyh, for you, I recommend The Looming Tower, Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 by Lawrence Wright. The "Road to 9/11" started in the 1940's before there was an Israel.
And let's dial back all of the personal attacks.

My understanding of Al Quaeda's (as well as the other jihad organizations) longterm agenda, is that they are attempting to force a return to the Ottoman Empire days when an Islamic regime ruled the middle East and elsewhere. They plan to do this by undermining any western-leaning states, force all westerners (businesses, military, etc) out, assume control of the oil wealth and other assets (which is one reason why I question the sale of advanced technology such as the AMD fabs to the UAE, who can be overthrown or manipulated into caving in to demands from extremists), and generally whatever else it takes to force a return to those halcyon days, except with a modern sharia religious cadre in control instead of some sultan.
And if the west permitted such a small group of power-hungry individuals masquerading under a religious facade to usurp democracy, such as it is, from the middle eastern states, then we'd be as stupid as those Europeans who believed in appeasing Hitler in the 1930's before eventually wising up and having to face a much more powerful adversary which eventually required the United States to enter into the war.
