My system will hibernate with no problems if I test it by setting it to
hibernate in 1 minute. If I set it to hibernate after 3 hours it never
hibernates. There are no errors displayed and there is nothing in the event
logs. I have disabled a second gigabit ethernet port that is on my
motherboard because I am not using it and don't want to be nagged about the
disconnected port. I will test hibernation with it enabled but I would hope
the system would just ignore a disabled device. How can I determine what is
preventing my system from hibernating if it has been sitting for a few
hours?

After doing some searching on Google I found a discussion about the
background optimization that XP does after a system is idle for 30 minutes.
Apparently it resets the idle timer and will NEVER let the system hibernate
or go to standby past 30 minutes. It will continously reset the idle timer.
Is there a workaround for this?

If you wait > 3 hours and then hibernate manually, will it hibernate?

Yes, it will hibernate manually.
