So we all know that Apples retina display for it's iPhone 4 is probably the sharpest display currently on the market with 364 pixels per inch, but I'm just wondering when this high pixel density is going to be applied to the likes of tablets and netbooks? the best you can hope for on a 10.1 inch display is a resolution of 1280x720, also HDMI 1.4a supports resolutions of 4k x 2k, eventually we're probably going to need a new standard display resolution to meet OLED TV's in the near future

remember that you also need hardware capable of powering such detailed displays. netbooks and tablets are often more limited and might have trouble displaying some programs/video feeds fullscreen. i'm sure the additional graphics processing would drain your small battery even quicker as well.

we might see 4x2 video in 5 years, but i doubt oled will mainstream very quickly due to the high prices.

keep in mind that quite a few people cannot even see the details of blueray when sitting back from the screen. i would say pc monitors and touchscreens would better utilize an update to resolutiosn than televisions.-

Why would anyone want that high of a resolution on a small screen? I personally would not like holding a tablet 3 inches from my eyes so I can read anything.

I'm sure that next gen HiDef TVs are in the works somewhere. Don't know about "near" future, look at how long it toot for the HD we have now to be standard. I don't think there will be a next gen HD out till the regular analog stations are not broadcasting and everything is in HD.

@hang

my phone is 480x800 on an approximately 4" screen. while good for what i need it for i'd gladly one up for double the resolution. text gets distorted during zooming (which you do alot of on a smartphone) and there is a "minimal size" to icons and the like because of it.

granted i cannot read microtext, however normal browsing is fine when holding the phone at a neutral position.

i think he was talking about 2k x 4k on a HDTV not a small device as well
