Question Home theater trouble

I'm now using the AC97 onboard sound. It has 5.1, but most of my content is only stereo (Netflix, Mp4, etc.). I just got a 5.1 speaker setup, which will synthesize 5.1 from stereo, but I cannot adjust the subwoofer beyond its level, and when using a 2 channel input the result is poor. What sound card would synthesize the 5.1, as well as let me manipulate things a little more?

Sorry for the duplicate. What I'm really asking is which 5.1 soundcards can create 5.1 output if you only have a stereo input? My onboard card does not.
