Hoping findpart can recover some files

Hello, I used findpart to scan my system. The drive that has gone bad
is an external USB 2.0 drive with a FAT32 partition around 157 GB.
While connected, this drive all of a sudden decided not to have a
volume label anymore and now shows up as "local disk". I have tried to
disconnect and remount the drive with no success.

If I try to access the drive, windows XP asks if I would like to format
the drive. Of course I don't want to do that...

I truly hope there's a way to restore my data.

Thanks,

Ludde

Below is what findpart returns to me. The drive that I'm interested in
is disk no 5:

Svend, thank you for your quick response.

I have a total of 3 internal disks and also the external one with the
problem. I'm also running Daemon Tools to mount images but currently
there's no image mounted, but perhaps that makes an extra disk show up.

Partition magic tells me that I have 4 disks.

Would it be tricky/risky to copy the backup boot sector over the
damaged one?

Thank you for your help.

Best,

Ludde

Thanks, I'm copying a lot of files right now thanks to your great
application!

I can run your scripts once I've copied as much as I can. And then I'll
send you an e-mail with the output.
Thanks and I'll be in touch.

How many disks do you have in the system?

Some times in the Windows NT line of operating systems, the "Findpart
all" command shows a disk twice or more, and I never figured out the
explanation. In this case disk 3 and 4 listed seem identical.

The boot sector of the partition on disk 5 in the listing is damaged,
but the backup boot sector is OK. If there is no more damage, the
partition can be repaired by copying the backup boot sector to the
boot sector.

The command to copy all files to a directory and below on another disk
is:

findpart chsdir 5 1 1 1 backupbootsector copy

This assumes that the directory structure and FAT are OK, and that you
have another partition with room for the files.

It is simple to copy the backup boot sector to the boot sector, but
for safety I do only do it after hiding the partition in the partition
tables, and verifying the integrity of the partition.

When the partition is repaired, it can be made visible again.

You can do:

findpart tables fp-a.txt
findpart 3 table fp-b.txt
findpart 4 table fp-c.txt
findpart 5 table fp-d.txt

and email me the output files.

Then I can help you copy the backup boot sector, and you can help me
getting closer to the explanation that a disk was listed twice.

If you have room for the files, it is still an option to copy the
files first using the command I gave.
