Question How can I quickly switch between DisplayPort and HDMI?

For my monitor, I have a DisplayPort and HDMI connection and I need to use both for various things (which means I'll need to be able to switch between the two). One way I thought I could do this would be to plug in both cables to my monitor and then switch them through the monitor settings but when I plug in both a DisplayPort and HDMI cable into the monitor, it doesn't display anything (even if I manually select either the DisplayPort or HDMI option). Therefore, the only way for me to switch between the two is to manually unplug one cable and plug in the other (and based on my monitor, that's easier said than done). I'm just wondering if there's an easier way to switch between the two or if I can fix the problem where plugging in two cables causes my monitor not to display anything.

It would help to know what hardware we are diagnosing.

Your monitor may autodetect the input source and gets confused when it sees two.
Is there a reason why you could not simply have the dp connection only?
