How Do I Install New Monitor ?

Hi,

I have DELL Dimension 8300 CPU.

I just bought a new Philips 21 inch CRT monitor.

It by mistake it came with a 19 inch monitor CD.

How do I install this monitor ? When I hooked it up it asked to put in the CD which I did but it kept searching & I couldn't stop it. So I had to hit the Ctr + Alt + Del to get out of it.

After that the monitor seems to work but I don't understand how without the proper drivers ? Also it seems most sites web pages do not fill the whole screen. I have set up the resolution to 1024 X 768 from desktop settings menu.

I am a newbie to this.

Do I still need the drivers & if yes where can I find them & how do I install them & how do I know they are properly installed ?

Can you Please give any URLs needed & step by step instructions if possible ?

You shouldn't really NEED the drivers to use the monitor. Sometimes they add a little functionality, but arn't really nessesary.

I'm not sure what you mean by web sites not filling the whole screen, can you be more specific?

The native drivers in XP will be fine.

Bring up your desktop. Right click anywhere on the desktop; go to Settings - Advanced (bottom right) - Monitor - Screen Refresh Rate. Hit the down arrow, and choose the highest number in there. If you only have "Default" listed, this is not good. That will only get you a 60 refresh rate. Terrible for your eyes & brain. If nice high numbers, pick the big one and keep okaying your way back to the desktop.

Using the controls on the front of the monitor, fill the screen sideways and top to bottom if there is black showing.

After this, you can go to Philips's USA web site; go to Contacts, and either leave an email message about your driver thing; OR, call customer service. They MAY??? help you.

But I have found that the makers' drivers (for ordinary use), really only add maybe another mode, or an additional refresh rate.

The sites say that this site is optimized for 800x600 resolution and some sites only fill half the screen which is a strin on eyes because letters are too small.

I am able to set the refresh rate at 85 Max so I guess that would be fine ?

Well if it's too small you can do numerous things to help that.

Simply lower your resolution to 800x600

Increase the font size in IE (hold ctrl and rotate your mouse wheel)

Increase your font size in windows display settings if you find everything is too small in general.

I personally like using a higher resolution so that I don't have to scroll anywhere to view larger pages.
