Actually a 2x8gb kit of DDR 3 would work nicely. The 12gb kits were more for the old socket 1366 triple channel motherboards.

You can do 4x4gb kits if your board has 4 slots. I was thinking in terms of if you ever wanted to go beyond 16gb. Virtual machines can chew up some ram depending on how you set them up and how many you run at once.

Also, if you go beyond 16gb, you would have to go to Windows 7 professional or Ultimate. Home Premium only goes to 16gb.

Depending on how many instances of windows you run simultaneously you could easily partition out 16GB. Also, RAM is cheap, so why not?

Agreed. Ram is cheap, but if you think all you need is 8gb for now, by all means go that route. Really good 2x4gb kits can be has for $40 and under these days.

RAM used by video rendering is nothing compared to the CPU usage... It tops 99% most of the time on my old Phenom II X2 3.1GHz...
