How shall I proceed?

I am about to set up a small network at home and I would appreciate some advice.

I need a NIC for my internet connection and then 2 more to connect my 2 computers together, is this possible or do I need a router?

Also, will there be problems using different operating systems, winxp & win98 to be exact.

How important is the choice of NIC? Can I get away with a couple of cheap no-name NICS without any trouble?

easiest setup is to put 1 nic in each computer and then connect them all with a router. If you have a broadband connection, a router will allow each computer to access the internet much easier. Wont have to have one computer on all the time.

Shouldnt have any problems with diff. os's

Just be sure to get a 10/100 nic card and you should be fine. linksys, d-ling, intel should work for you.

Thanks, I'll see if I find a cheap router...those I've found so far cost around $150 which is too much for me.
