Recommendations to upgrade this? I plan to install a new WD Caviar Black, Will any of the E6x00 Conroes work in this, or is there a best choice? I would like to get more performance, but lower power consumption than the Pentium D 820. I have even considered the Celeron 430 Conroe.

I don't know...With 4 GB,it does not seem as snappy as T2370 in Toshiba laptop with 2GB. Both Vista HP. Maybe W7 can change that. I did try Linux Mint8 flash, it seemed quicker with that. Perhaps it has a problem. I am not very well schooled about computers.

I Never owned Vista. But I've used it a bit here and there.

My friend has a Q8200(Which is a quad core) and Vista lags a bit(My Dual core E7300 is really fast with windows 7 :) )

I've heard many people complain about Vista being laggy despite of having hardware that can actually run it pretty well.

I didn't notice much of a performance migrating between Vista and 7. I suspect a fresh install of the latest patched Vista might help your performance issues.

If you are going to move to 7, think about just getting a new CPU/Mobo all together. The RAM will probably still work with some AM2/AM2+ Mobos. Yes, the 820 is a dog, but it should be comparable to a T2370.

But anyway as for your best CPU bet if you are in the states:

I don't think the E6x50'w will work because of the 1333 mhz FSB.

Alternatively, if you are in the US, you can spend $340 for virtually a new quad-core system from the Dell outlet with Windows 7 which would be about the cost of the CPU+Hard drive+Win 7 and donate your old system for a tax write-off.

I haven't seen any Quad Core for as low as $340. All I need is the Tower, no Monitor, keyboard, etc. A Dual Core would work also. I only do basics.
