The current gen http://vr-zone.com/articles/amd-demos-dual-cypress-graphics-card--hemlock/7718.html?doc=7718 is over 100% faster than a 285.
Next year? If LRB is 4x faster than their previous claim, then itll be very competitive, otherwise, itll be somewheres in the middle, and only after billions have been spent.
I dont see a very good ROI on this, and it wont change either, as Ive said, the gpus will only get faster and faster.
To expect LRB to double in perf every 2 years using cpus, I just dont see it happening, and realize this.
GPUs have yet to use things like immersion techniques as well as HKMG, all of which is assumed for LRB from the get go, and once GPUs start having this tech as well, its even on to larger increases

Well gpu's are already starting to look a bit clock speed limited around the 1ghz mark, so yes HKMG could and should make that a big jump forward.

This is on top of the usual increases mind. ATI pretty much doubled the speed on the 5870 compared to 4870 without doubling the clock speed.

Hm possibly, if you consider the 4890 was something of an aberration, definitely a special case in terms of clocks.

The jump ATI made would be from 750 to 850mhz so 12% or so?

Yeah, they doubled the amount of the processing units. The 5870 is a massive monster! Yet, AMD still managed to really bring down idle power usage.

If I had spare cash, I'd be buying one, but the wife would kill me.

What I am saying is as time time goes by LRB can only improve. Do you think that Intel will release a card which will be slower than the latest from the current top two.

No. Thought not. Intel will do what is required to make LRB work. Its credibility and money is based on it.

As the Japanese Emperor said when they bombed pearl harbour is that they "Awoken a sleeping Giant"

Intel will not sleep again like they did before. Intel are evil bla bla bla - more like AMD are stupid like a labrador puppy taking on a adult Rockwieler. This is now a mission for Intel to totally wipe out anything AMD do. Period.

What you have also failed to mention the fall of the wayside of Nvidia chipsets which weekens even the might Huang let alone ATI / AMD.

Im all for AMD moving forward but im with context. Intel are evil has been battered to death now, move on and promote AMD to survive let alone anything else. By the time AMD release a new chip AMD will have 3 maybe 4 new chips out - be on 32nm and now 22nm round the corner. I cant see it personally working out for AMD but i have a glimmer of hope as Intel outsell 10 to 1 amd over here and the move to AM3 hasnt helped either.

Don't tell her :)

oh and forum wife or real life :)

When was this stuff said? Because I've been watching public announcments pretty closely, I thought, and I don't recall anyone from Intel claiming LRB would be out in 2009.

Yes, it was to go to the apps, for gpgpu usage. I cant recall the links, but theyre there.
Im just reporting Intels own words, nothing more
In the links, I recall it MIGHT go to gpgpu usage by qtr4 this year, per quote

get your priorities right a video card wins anytime

If you don't mind, can you please elaborate on that? GPUs should be less flexible than CPUs, and this is exactly the reason why they're still mostly used for graphical purposes.

Meanwhile, back on the 32nm ranch :) :

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Foundry startup GlobalFoundries Inc. has updated its process roadmap and rolled out a customer partnership program.

It appears that the company's roadmap has slipped for its separate 32-nm and 45-/40-nm offerings. Comparing the new roadmap to the last update, the foundry company has slightly pushed out the introduction of its 32-nm, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology based on high-k and metal gates.

That process, devised especially for Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s microprocessors, was supposed to move into ''tape out'' or ''risk production'' in the first quarter of 2010. Now, the technology is targeted for ''risk production'' in the third quarter of 2010.

How that impacts AMD is unclear, although the processor maker could fall further behind Intel Corp. GlobalFoundries denied its roadmap has slipped, however.

...

GlobalFoundries denied its roadmap has slipped. ''Our roadmap for 32-nm SOI has not slipped,'' according to a spokesman for the company. ''Yes, the timeframe for introduction has been altered slightly compared to the roadmap we showed you in July, but that is not because of any issues with the technology. The roadmap has simply been adjusted to align with AMD's product needs.

So initial "risk" (i.e., test) production a full year from now, and volume about 6 months plus after that. Yep, it's obvious that 32nm hasn't 'slipped' - it's just the stinkin' roadmap needing adjustment, is all 😀.

Oh is that what they call it.. Cant wait for a quad core Phenom 2 with 4 cores disabled... Then call it a paperweight.. Ive ordered mine at 9.95 per unit and will plug it in and enable all 4 cores for a tenner..

Mean while at present times intel is now five years a ahead of AMD..... ( im joking )

PS Ricky Gervais is not funny America - hes crap

AMD = Another Major Delay

Anyway, to summarize, it seems AMD is hitting on 1 or 2 out of 8 cylinders at the moment. IIRC some fanbois here were spouting off a couple months ago, about how AMD was gonna release all these amazing new products right about now and regain the lead over Intel in all areas.

So what actually happened?

It's Intel with almost all the goodies - AMD has a real cheap quad core with no cache, the promise of another speed bump on the aging Phenom 2 (yawn!), and what appears to be a pretty good video card. And the bad news of no early release of BD, 32nm slipping, and yet another lousy quarter of earnings.

Kinda funny to watch AMD's antics during Intel's IDF week. Intel showcases up & coming technology, while AMD is like the pervert flasher in the corner whispering "Psst - hey, honey, take a looksee at what I got under this raincoat!" 😀

If BD slips into 2H 2011, it'll be up against the 22nm Ivy Bridge, not Sandy Bridge. And much further than that, up against Haswell.

So, is AMD doomed?? It ain't lookin' pretty, folks! And did I even mention financials yet??? 😀

AMD - another manufacturing delay
AMD - AlMost Dry
AMD - And Might Do it
AMD - Arse My Dual-core
AMD - Arse, Major Delay ( no 10 )
AMD k8- And May i Dump Kate
athlon - all things here look outdated now
Phenom - Phuck, here endures NO More

its a pervert with a rain coat and a small old todger.

You know what is sad hellboy, it's the way you used to actually pretend to be non-biased lol.
