HP S20 and Windows XP

I have an HP S20 and have been unable to get it to function on my new
computer, which uses XP Pro - I tried the HP software but no go.

Can anyone recommend software that will allow me to continue to use my
S20?

You did install the software BEFORE connecting the scanner?

What happens? What do you get for errors, or error messages.

Have you got another scanner or camera plugged in at the same time?
If so unplug the other device from the USB (hubs and direct connections),
then reinstall the software, and you should hopefully get it working.
Likewise other scanners or cameras won't work if the S20 is plugged in as
well. You have to just keep swapping the plugs round.
HP know about this problem as it's how they've set up the S20 to work under
Windows XP. However they've never done anything to rectify it.

Took group's advice - stripped old software off - reinstalled - hooked
up S20 - rebooted - and now it works (there is a law somewhere that
computers do not work until someone else tells you to do something you
tried before - something like noises go away at an auto shop) - thanks
to all.

It now tells me I need to clean it to get the calibration to work -
blew it out - will continue to try and figure this out.

The S-20 can be a real bear, or pain in the back side when it comes to
dirt. It only takes a spec to create lines and colorful spectral
lines

Some time just blowing off the prisms works and other times it takes a
cleaning which is then followed by several "blow it out and try again"
cycles.

Some times you can scan for hours with no problems and other times you
have to clean every few slides. Other times you scan rolls of film
thinking you have great scans only to discover a scan line.
Inspection may show it to go back three or four rolls which can be
really exasperating.
