Hroldar the Punching Bag...

Man this quest took forever. If you haven't been working on your
Hand-to-Hand skill, this just turns to utter tedium. I went from 8 to 35 in
that skill, just doing this quest. (Presumeably I got 3 points from books
somewhere along the way...) I was almost tempted to use a Drain Fatigue
amulet on him, but the guy said I wasn't allowed to use any spells or
weapons. Kind of annoying that a REQUIRED quest forces you to have
profficiency in a skill that is otherwise mostly useless. (Well required if
you want to advance in the Bloodmoon plotline, anyhow.) I suppose I could
have just found a trainer, but I consider that to be sort of cheating.
(Once my money went into the 6-digits range and I realized I could afford to
train myself to the max in pretty much every skill, I decided it would just
spoil it if I actually did. It's a little upsetting that they didn't devise
more than one means of completing this quest, like bribing or otherwise
persuading him. (He won't let you speak to him at all, so all forms of
persuasion are out.) Also, as somebody who cares about the environment, I'd
have loved to be able to take his side, but apparently that's not an option
either. Or maybe it would have been more interesting if after punching him
in the face repeatedly for over an hour to have him finally get ticked off
and fight back. Beating pacifists to a pulp just makes you feel like
dirt...

My Spellsword was unable to to make contact with him using HTH. She
used damage and drain fatigue spells, including a very powerful custom
made drain fatigue spell, until he collapsed. My PC completed the quest
successfully anyway, and got her reward for doing so. All that matters
is that you get him to leave without killing him. The quest giver never
even commented on my character's use of magic to complete the quest.

Yeah, I was too at first. A lvl 8 HTH attack hits maybe once every 10
punches. But if you sit there whacking away for long enough, you'll gain
skill at it. I went up 27 levels in the skill before I finally succeeded in
the quest. By the time I was at lvl 35 HTH, I was hitting more than
missing, but still it seemed to take forever to get him to react. (He
didn't collapse on me, he just finally got tired of standing there getting
whacked in the face and agreed to go away.)

Wish I'd known that was allowed. I was ready to just kill him instead, but
I hate killing characters unless absolutely necessary, or they attack me
first. On the plus side, I got a nice fat 5x bonus to speed the next time I
levelled. Though with the Boots of Blinding Speed, that's hardly much of a
change anymore...

My current game I intended to start my character in Bloodmoon pretty
much as soon as I got her out of Seyda Neen but got stuck on that
quest for pretty much the same reason as you. (Three guesses how
successful I was with Hroldar at level 1!)

So I went over to the dark side and trained like mad and loaded in all
kinds of mods - I'm currently doing the Suran Underworld,

I had even done the Bloodmoon legion smugglers' quest at level 1 so
you can tell how hardcore I was trying to fight it...I even tried
"Frenzy Humanoid" on Hroldar - still didn't work...

Yeah, thing is, my char is like level 34 now. He can pretty much mow
through anything, but this *non-optional* quest, which absolutely depends on
having advanced knowledge of an otherwise nearly useless skill, was an
absolute showstopper for a long time...

That said, I really wish it was possible to see your target's current
fatigue level when you were punching him, just so you'd know how much longer
you'd have to stand around smacking him in the face. If I'd have known I'd
go from lvl 8 to lvl 35 before I finally succeeded, I'd have not wasted my
time and gone and trained in HTH or something.

You Can see their current fatigue level. It shows as a bar on the
screen. I trained HTH versus a bunch of the sleepers in the 6th house
bases out of boredom, but even then it took a while to finish this
quest. One that happens shortly thereafter was a game killer for me
though. It is the Only quest that I know of where there is only one way
to complete it and there is no indication of this or the right way to do it.

I only see HP's as well, if you have something we don't have, please direct
us to it, or post it...

I have the "Enemy hand to hand damage" mod installed which makes punches
do actual HP damage not fatigue (both to you and your own punches) which
makes the game show the HP bar when you hit someone. I've never got as
far through bloodmoon as this quest yet - I'm a serial restarter! - and
reading this thread I'm wondering if this mod will break the quest if
you're not allowed to kill the guy?
